So wat's yer name, kid? *Skirts looks up for a minute, then continues to string beads onto the cord. She’s busy making necklaces* Well, if you’se wan’na get technical id’s Elima Carla Ranew. *a smiles widens over her face until she’s wearing a large grin*
You got a nick-name or was 'dat it? No way, dat’s too long ta be a nickname. My nickname’s Skirts. Got called dat when I was in tha Refuge. *she notices how your face changes at the mention of the children’s prison, and she quickly adds* I was innocent. Dey was arrestin a lot a kids during tha strike. Anyway, lot’sa troublemaker type goils dey don’t wear skirts an dresses. Dey prefer ta look like tha boys. I don’t know why. When I showed up I wore my skirts. Dey all kept tellin me I wasn’t no newsie cause I din’t dress like one. Dey named me Skirts. I liked it, so dat’s what I’m called.
Where you from, anyways? Queens, but I only lived dare until I was five. Afta my folks died my sista an I moved ta Manhattan. *she drops a bead, and leans over to pick it up, then picking it up continues to bead the necklace*
Whadd'a yah look like? A goil. *she puts the necklace aside for a moment and stands up* Take a guess, ‘ow old do ya think I am? *She stands as tall as she can, which is only four foot ten. Her long wavy chestnut hair is pulled back by a white ribbon. It cascades down her back and falls into uneven curls at her waist. Her eyes are an emerald green, and appear quite large for such a small girl, but they have a pleasant sweet look, and almost guarantee a smile from an onlooker. Her skin is a peachy cream color, with small rose colored lips, but when she smiles her smile takes up a good portion of her face. She almost always smiles, for she is rarely upset. She wears a plain white blouse, with a yellow waist, and a sky blue skirt. She appears quite small, perhaps thirteen or fourteen. Once you’ve unsuccessfully guessed her age she speaks* I’m seventeen. Just turned id February 8. I was born in 1887. Hard ta believe I know. Nobody usually guesses correctly. Although Kyro came pretty close.
Got any 'ahhh, distin'guishin charact'ahristics? I ‘oped ya wouldn’t notice. I kinda limp when I walk. Id ain’t nottin big, just on account a my lef’ leg. Id ain’t even with my right one.
If you emptied out yah pockets on dis' table right now, wat would fall out? My days earnings, about a dolla er so. A kerchief, an some beads probably. I got a real fine nicklice ‘ere. *takes a strand of bright blue beads out of her pocket* Id din’t sell taday, so ‘ere’s whad I’m gonna do. I’ll let ya ‘ave id fer *pauses a moment to think* fer tha low price a eight cents. Id’sa real bargain. Good quality too. *holds the necklace out for you to see*
How'd you find 'da place? Oh, ‘appened upon id. ‘Ad been lookin fer awhile, but I couldn’t find a place. Id’s nice ‘ere.
You drink, smoke, gamble...  Goodness, no. Just because I was placed in the Refuge, doesn’t make me one of those kind of goils. Besides dat, I’m a God fearin goil, an I know he don’t approve a dat kind a stuff.
Related tah any'bady we'd know? My sista’s in Pennsylvania, so unless you’se got family dare, I don’t think so.
Who's yah best friend? Wheneva I need ta think things ova, I always talk ta God, but fer friends down ‘ere, Bell. Ah, ya know ‘er as Sarah Johnson. When she come ‘ere I called ‘er dat, on account a ‘er southern ways. *Giggles* She an Kyro are a great couple. An, a’couse dere’s Minus. *sighs* E’s been through a lot, an I think dat tends ta make ‘im nervous around people, but once ya git passed dat, you’ll see e’s wondaful. *she sits down and begins working on her necklace again*
Got any woyds tah live by? *looks up and smiles* Everything ‘appens fer a reason. We might not see tha reason now, but id’s all in God’s plan. Ya sure ya don’t whanna buy a nicklice? *holds it out once again*
