Dove's (Personal) Review: An interesting story... well planned, and engrossing characters. However, the plot was a little "slow moving" for my taste. Many parts seemed to drag, not allowing the story to blossom into the "great western" it was meant to be.
The plot??? Shefford, the main character, sets out to find [and rescue] the love of his life, Fay Larkin. He finds her hidden away in a Mormon-run community, living as a "sealed wife." That's it, in a nut-shell, as far as "plot" is concerned.
This book could have easily been condensed into half its length. Grey's descriptive narratives are lovely, but totally unnecessary. He paints beautiful pictures with his words, but I - personally - don't need to read about the numerous sun sets during Shefford's entire journey. Once is enough... I get it!
This is my first experience with Zane Grey's work. I enjoyed his style of writing enough to give him a second try, but, after that, I think I'll be moving on to other authors. His work just isn't enticing enough for me to want to read much more of it.
He delivered [what could have been] a powerful story, in a rather long-winded, relaxed manner. That ruined it for me.
Unfornately, I'm giving this one a "Thumbs DOWN" rating. Sorry folks... if you're looking for a "gripping" tale, you won't find it here.
