Summer, a time when kids are playing, but Tonya was hard at work. She was working on an invention that she had dreamed about. She was making wings to fly with; they were made out of titanium and glider fabric. She had just put the last piece into the wings, when her aunt told her that her father was on the phone. He wanted to know if she wanted to go swimming, she asked her aunt she said, yes. So she told her dad that she could. He said that he would pick her up at 1:00. Tonya went back down to the garage. She made sure all the nuts and bolts were in the right place and were secure. She folded the wings and put the hand and foot casings into a bag. Tonya packed them with her flippers and facemask; her dad came with his red Chevy truck. An inner tub lay in the back of the truck. They drove out to Port Jervis, were they swam in the Delaware River. On one side of the river were cliffs that they climb up and jump off. Once they got there she swam out to the cliffs and began to climb her father stood on the shore watching. For she had never climbed to the top to jump.
Once up on top she took out the hand and foot casings and put them on. She was so far away that her father had no idea what she was doing. She opens her hands and metallic claws appear on her hands. She hits a small blue button on both her ankles and as she jumps metallic talons appear on her feet as the fabric wings open and catch the wind. She flaps the wings and she takes off into the air, flying like a bird on the wind. Her father stands on the shore with mouth wide open. She looked like a giant bird in the sky. Her father ran up to her and started asking her so many questions once she landed that she answered.
Once they were done they headed home early. On the ride home she had asked her father not to tell anyone of what he saw today. He swore his mouth would be shut until the day came when she would let him tell. They got home around 5:00. In the morning the next day she got up did some chores and watched some TV Her aunt and cousins left and she walked up one of the paths over by her house. Tonya found a hill; she had all her flying gear on. The path led her to and open hilly field, finding a clear running path. She hit the buttons on her ankles as she ran down the hill.
On her flight she, flew over a trees mystified by how fast she is flying. She noticed in one of the trees was a hawks nest, the mother bird not there she was able to fly by again. There were four eggs. She had flown by everyday until one day she saw the eggs have hatched. She had noticed one was very small, realizing it was the runt of the clutch of eggs, she took it. Raising it by hand, the bird learned to come by hearing her whistle. She taught the bird how to fly and a few times attempted to help it hunt. She named the bird Dermit. She would let him side on her shoulder like a large parrot. One day, when Dermit was on her shoulder one of his talons scratches her shoulder accidentally. It left a double scar on her left shoulder. As the summer turned to fall, and the nights becoming earlier. Tonya knew that tomorrow was a new day and the first day of school.
The next morning, she got up at 6:00 she took her shower and got dressed. By 6:45 she left for her bus stop. Her friend Kevin was there and a freshman named Nikki. The bus had arrived on time for once, but yet had to stop for another person to get onto the bus. His name was Dan a senior at the local high school. As usual he took the last seat on the bus. Everyday he would sit there they would talk on the bus. One day, she had an idea. To write him a note to tell him that she liked him. Dan asked her the day after he found it, in his locker. He had never answered her note so one day she flew to the school with her flying gear on, also a costume that made her look like a giant bird. Dan had driven to school that day; she had seen him walking across the football field towards the school. She dove down and grabbed him like and eagle catching a salmon. She called for Dermit, and she few followed by the hawk as Dan struggled to be freed of her metallic grasp. She placed him on the roof of the school before landing herself and Dermit lands on her shoulder. Dan didnt know who or what it was that had done this. Since Tonya wore a mask so know one would be able to notice her.
Dan asked her whom it was that lurked under the feather and cloth mask. Tonya racking her mind for a name came up with only one, Phoenix. She had asked Dan if she would swear loyalty to her, he said no. He did not understand why she was asking. She asked him if he would be loyal to her by giving her his love. He still resisted. By then the bell had run and it was time for first period. She told him as his feet touched the grass once again. That she would ask him everyday and each day he refused a student would be hurt. The next day Dans friend Bob came into the lunchroom with a long single but deep scar along his left shoulder. Bob in tears told, ask, and pleaded Dan to swear his loyalty. Dan refused and Tanya was there to hear it for her table was right next to hers and her friends. The days, week and months pasted more and more students had been marked. Then only Dan remained unharmed.
One day Tonya walked out of the lunchroom, only to return in her gear and costume. Eerie silences feel to the normally loud room. By then everyone in the school was afraid of the Phoenix, they had learned not to mess with her. They had all stayed in their seats, watching Dan and her. Dan said no before she could ask him one last time, and all she could say was watch your back. With that she turned and walked away and a few moments later Tonya returned back to the lunchroom. Her friends had told her everything. She sat there in knowing realization.
A few days later Dan had decided to take a walk down the street. Not having any real place to walk to he just walked. On his walk down the wooded street past the colorful houses. He thought he saw Tonya holding some big bundle walk up a path into the woods. He followed her, trying the best he could not to make a sound as he walked on the leaves and brittle sticks. He tried his best to stay as close to the trees and the scarce shadows. He followed her up the hill where she takes off and lands. He watched and waited until she was done with her flight. She put all the gear away not knowing that he was there. She looks up for a moment having that feeling that someone was watching her. As she looked off towards the entrance of the path. She saw Dan standing there. She went back to her work and as she walked by him her grabbed her shoulder, causing her to wince in pain. She didnt wince because his grip was so ruff, but because while she was flying she re-opened the wounds on her shoulder. She tried to break free of his grip, but only caused the sleeve of her shirt to rip.
He gasped in surprise, and let go of her arm. There was a little stream of blood sliding down her back, and staining what was left of her shirt. He looked at her shoulder then to her, asking her what had happened. Tonya had told him that Dermit had done it, and as if by just the mentioning of his name. The red tailed hawk fell through the trees. He landed on her shoulder only for her to wince moving him to the other one. She had asked him one last time if he could ever truly love her, and he nodded yes. With that Dermit jumped from her shoulder over to Dans right shoulder and scratched him twice. They had walked back down to her house where she cleaned out the wound and bandaged it. As she was cleaning and wrapping it, Dan had asked her if she was the Phoenix, she said she was. With that ever through all the things she had done, his feelings for her had grown.
He asked her even though he though she would say no, if she would make him wings. She said she would. Tonya also made him hand casings and talons. She showed him how to take off, land and fly with them. By then a few years had pasted Dan and her were still together. She had made more wings in different styles and sizes of different types of people. They got a patent for her invention and with the money they had saved up over the years bought some land. There they created a place to buy and fly with the wings. Unfortunately the people who bought it would have to have a vast amount of money to buy it. By then they were engaged, and were married a few months later the whole ceremony flying a few thousand feet in the air. They would go on long flights during the night. Then one day Tonya finally realized why Dermit scratched me both the same way. Dermit knew they were meant for each other. The hawk still flew with them, and lived on his own. Sometimes just for the fun of it she would dress up as the Phoenix and would go to the school just to scare the hell out of all the students.
She can remember the one-day she went to the school after everything blew over. She walked in as the Phoenix and over to Dan's table where she took off her mask. The lunchroom had gone silent again, and the look she got all there mouths open like hungry animals. One of the students walked up and was about to hit her. When he pulled back his arm, she hit the button on her hand, and long three-inch claws appeared. The boy sees it and in the end just waves and walks back to his seat. Since that day she was respected around the town she also gave so many people jobs.
A group of friends and I went up to the woods by my house one chilly October night, to play Manhunt. One of the boys who went with us was named, Griffith. He had blue eyes, brown hair that parted in the middle. We where in usual manner, split into two teams. That was about six others and I. Unfortunately Griffith was on the other team. Ok I admit it I had a crush on the boy, so sue me. OK so every time, I looked into his eyes I seemed to melt. His eyes seem to shame the morning sky. Ack, Im getting all mushy and stuff. Back to the story.
My team got to go hide first, we had all had dark cloths on. It was always good to where dark cloths, at lest I thought. It was funny, because every time he bent over to fix his shoes or something. My eyes just seem to wander towards him, and then to his boxer. I heard everyone yelling at me so I knew it was time to go hide. The leaves under our feet crunched as my group ran, sort of like a pack of hunting wolves. That night we wouldnt know how close to real wolves we were going to be. I had found the closest climbable tree, since I knew I was the best climber then every one else. From my hiding place I could see the other team. I could also see the sun setting over the hill, as the crunching of the others teams feet came closer.
Griffith, run up to the tree where I was hiding, I had noticed something about him. He was a bit taller then me, he was about five feet nine inches taller, and had a broken nose. I could also see his magically delicious muscles. Then as all the others past by and he was standing under the tree I heard a new sound. I could tell it was some creature. I moved myself around the tree limb to see a large wolf coming their way. I watched as the wolves pace quickened, and was running right towards Griffith! I yelled out his name, he turned just in time for him to turn around and get a face full of fur. The wolf attacked him it was tearing off his cloths, at his flesh. I couldnt do anything except watch. The fear had consumed me it wouldnt let me go save him. The wolf looked at me with its golden eyes; they seemed to gleam with animal delight. It barked and growled at me. I could hear every one else yelling and having a good time they didnt even hear Griffiths cries for help and pain. The wolf looked off into their direction I yelled for them to watch out. I again was too late. The wolf ran after them, I could hear their screams.
I climbed down to the stain of bloody leaves. I saw Griffiths body. I went to see if he was alive, he was but barely. I left him there to find the others; I could find them not even a trace of them. There was nothing no sound not even a disturbed leaf. I went back to where Griffith lay, I checked on him again. He was still breathing. All of a sudden I heard the low sorrow filled howl of the wolf. I tried to pick Griffith up and drag him as far as I could towards my house. We were only to be run down by the crazed creature. He was continuos and tried his own way to help, he used his injured even broken legs to run. He said countless of time to leave him, but I wouldnt I couldnt. My heart would surely died if I did. The wolf caught up to us and pounced on us. The force of the hit knocked me a few feet away. I could see the wolf was attacking Griffith again. I screamed out in rage, and attacked the wolf.
I grabbed a near by stick and hit it repeatedly. I t attacked back, I was bitten and scratched many times. I gave the wolf one final blow before I was going to give my life away to it. The hit injured it enough to scare it away. There was nothing left of my beloved Griffith. I never got to tell him how much I had truly cared for him. I could still remember his cries for help, and the last words he screamed out before he died. He had said he loved me, and now I know what he truly felt for me. I wish some nights on shooting stars, that they were still alive. They never seen that wolf again, but some nights as I sit alone I can still hear the wolves mournful cry. It cry for the one who lived to tell their tale. I have overheard some hunters say, that at night you could still see the kids play there eternal game.
He opened his eyes he feels the pain of the bullet that was lodged in his stomach. It was from the gun that lay only a few feet away from him. He knows he is alive, and will live, but he had someone else more important then himself on his mind now. Now he worries about her, his friend. She was standing next to him when the masked man entered the convenient store. All he remembers of those seemingly insagifigant moments. Was that a masked man came in holding a gun in his hand. He had pointed the gun at the young store clerk, yelling at him to empty the register and to do it quickly or he would die. Understanding what he must do the clerk emptied the money into a paper bag. Shakily he hands it over to the masked man. Then he turned on the people who stood there in fear. In a gruff, fearless voice the man said, Give me all you valuables. Put them in the bag.
Katie, his friend was the first to be yelled at to hurry it up, as the young clerk hit the button to the silent alarm. He can remember her looking into the eyes behind the mask with fear in he own eyes. She had turned to him and in a whisper, Please Dameon dont be a hero, just give him what you have. She placed into the bag what little money she had and what little valuables too. They both could tell that the masked man was smiling from underneath his black wooly ski mask. Once he was done taking his collection, the masked man spun around and shot the clerk right between the eyes. The boys body drops to the floor. To all which seems to be in slow motion, even though it happened so quickly and fiercely.
From behind one of the aisle in the store an off duty cop, ran out from behind a stack of cereal boxes. With his gun the cop shot the masked man in the arm while he was off guard. The masked man had a much better aim; there was a loud bang and the cop feel to the ground dead. The bullet hit the cop between the eyes. His body fell to the floor face first as a pool of blood started to form. Katie and Dameon could see the pool of blood form by the dead register boys head too. By then the cops had arrived and were sitting outside, they could all see the fear and frustration well up in the, mans eyes. Seeing the cops he began to line up the people in an execution style. Dameon remembered the man telling them to place their hands behind their heads, they all did. They were all facing the cops as the robber stood behind them, gun placed painfully to the back of the first persons head. Dameon looked at his long time friend and watched the tears roll down her cheek. He worried for her, how she will survive the situation, if they survive. The masked man started executing the people. Katie and the others would flinch as the sound of the gun shooting. He wanted to comfort her so bad, he wanted to tell him it would be ok, but he knew it would be a lie. He whispered his best reassurance to her, Katie dont worry. Dont cry theyll stop him. Youll see. He wanted to comfort her.
He knew if he did he would be shot. The dead bodies fell to the ground, and only a few mere people until Katie and him would be shot. Katie could not stand it anymore, he could see it in the way she looked and her muscles tensing and relaxing. She stood up and ran for the door; the masked man looked at her attempt to escape. Dameon, saw him raise his gun are and first. Katie was shot three times before hitting the glass door and falling to the floor. Dameon not caring anymore if he got shot, he ran to his friends side. He looked at the man and his gun; he stood up and ran at him. Only to be shot in the stomach, by then the cops had opened the door. Once Dameon fell to the floor shot rang out and the masked man soon followed his gun skittering towards Dameon. The medics came in and put Katie and Dameon on a stretcher. As they were rolling him to the ambulance, he had asked if he could go to the same place as Katie was, the medic nodded. He watched Katie be placed into the ambulance; he saw the wires and tubes coming out of so many places in her.
As he was placed in the ambulance and on his way to the hospital, Dameon thought of Katie. Once there he was put under for his operation, when he came to. The doctor placed the bullet that was lodged in his stomach in his hand. He was wheeled into a room with two other people. One of them was Katie the other he didnt know, but oddly the person had handcuffs on both his hands. He then realized that it was the man behind the mask. He then turned back to Katie pure raged in his eyes. He was released a few days later but still came back slept in the chair in the corner, watching waiting for her to wake up. Until one day the man woke up and asked, Heyhey Hey! You in the chair. Where am I? Dameon seemed to growls as he answers him, Go rot in a pile of shit, you asshole. Dameon surprising himself he said that and the surprise on the other guys face. He then swung his chair around so his back was towards the guy as he watched Katie. Tears slid down his cheeks, from his evergreen eyes, his fears ran wild in his mind.
The next day, Dameon came to see Katie and the guy was gone. Since he was at the hospital so often they left his hospital bed in the room for him to sleep on. She looked better and better each day, her body doing its best to fix itself, but yet her eyes would not open. The only tube that remained was her IV. She stirred in her bed finally, but Dameon had fallen asleep. When he woke he saw two sky blue orbs stairing at him. Weakly she asked him, Have you been here the whole time? He nodded as tears of joy slide out of his eyes. Yes I have. All the days and weeks he was sitting and watching her, he racked his mind on what he would say to her. What he would say when she woke up. But the only thing his mind and heart would let him say, KatieI love you. She had smiled not really surprised but more relieved, for she would not have to say it first. Something she to could not bring herself to say for so long as they had been friends. Smiling weakly she says, I love you too. With that Dameon slide off his bed and over to hers where he leaned down and they shared a passionate kiss. Since that day they have never been separated.
It was around 1940, in Germany during World War II. Cynthias father was American; he went back to the United States, before the war started. He was there working for the government and finding a place for them to live. He mother was German, and her grandfather trained German Shepherds. So did Cynthia and her mother. He grandfather died before the war started. One day, Nazi troops came by their village. They had stopped and bought all the dogs. In their gratitude they sent Cynthia and her mother to a concentration camp. The troops found out later through selfish neighbors that Cynthia was half-American.
When they got there, Cynthia a few of the German Shepherds. The head commander of the camp, stood on a podium with a microphone. He told all the people, who where getting off the train. That if they were not out of their lines the dogs would attack them. Cynthia as he said it stepped out of her line. The commander saw her, he yelled to the troops to let the dogs go. The dogs ran at her, she yelled sit in German. To the commanders surprise the dogs sat. Cynthia whistled and the dog stood up and ran to her licking her face. She told the dogs to return to their troops. She turned to the commander and explained how she could do that.
he told her and her mother to go to the dog compound. He told one of the troops to take them their. He walked them their with his dog at his side. Cynthia noticed as she walked that he has brown eyes, tall, but thin. He was wearing the Nazi uniform. The mans name was Draga. He said if they want they could call him Drag. They talked as they walked Cynthia asked Boris if he would let his dog go. He nodded and let it go telling her, that his dogs name is Exile. He let the dog go and Cynthia and the dog played with each other as they walked. Her mom was walking by them and she smiled as she watched them. Draga asked Cynthias mom if she was intended to marry, meaning Cynthia. She said no and Draga smiled.
Everyday Cynthia trained and worked with the dogs, except for Sunday so the dogs could have a time to rest and she could clean out there kennels. Every time she went to cleaning her braided blonde hair would get into her face and sky blue eyes. Many of soldiers watched her with shear delight. Watching her bend down to clean out the bowls and other items the dogs had even the prisoners staired at her like that. On those days when she was done working, Draga and Cynthia would walk around the perimeter of the camp with Exile walking along behind them. They smiled as they walked and as they did their friendship grew stronger. Sometime Draga would help Cynthia train the dogs. He would take off his coat and shirt and place them on the fence that kept the dogs in and would work in his under shirt. Cynthias jaw dropped as she saw his rippling muscles from under his shirt and she had to close her mouth quickly before Draga saw her.
She started to like him more then a friend after time, as did he but they could not tell each other. One day Hitler had come to visit and inspect the camp. Cynthia, Draga, and her mom had to be there when he arrived. The commander escorted him to the dog compound after they ate and inspected the rest of the camp. Cynthia showed Hitler how they trained and treated the dogs. He said in German that they were doing a sufficient job and then he left. Draga had to go with the commander and Hitler as they walked back to the entrance of the camp. Hitler had asked Draga if he liked Cynthia. Wondering why his supreme leader asked that he had to deny it other wise he would not like what Hitler had in mind. Draga was told by his commander to go back to the dog compound. He ran back there, when he got there he stood there catching his breath and watching Cynthia. He sighed, a sigh of relief. They finished the training the dogs and they went and ate lunch. After lunch they played a few quick games of cards, cleaned up a bit and went to dinner. Since Draga was always over by the dog kennel he was placed in the same bunkhouse as Cynthia and her mom.
A couple of days later, Draga told Cynthia that the American troops where closing in. He told them that all the occupants of the camp had to be moved. By then it was bitter winter. The only thing was that she and her mom had to run the whole way there. They stopped at an abandoned village; Cynthias mom died that night in her frozen sleep. Draga had found them both that mourning. Cynthia was crying over her moms frozen body. He pulled her onto his shoulder and hugged her and rocked her back and forth. He whispered words of reassurance to her, as he held her. From then on she was aloud to ride on the back of one of the trucks while everyone else ran. She was kept out of sight of the other prisoners and soldiers. A few months later the American troops stormed the new camp. All the Nazi troops were taken prisoner. To her surprise one of the many troops was her father, she begged and pleaded to her father to let Draga go. She told her father of what Draga had done and how he helped her and mom. She was then able to build up her strength and tell her father that she loved him, and that he was her only family left. Well beside her father. Draga was set free and they went to live in the America. They were married and lived in a small town outside of New York City. Her father ended up living with them and all their dogs. The same dogs who gave them the luck to be together.
She walked into the dance, and saw him and smiled. He saw her in the doorway he walked up to her. He had said something to cause her to run out of the school. His name is Scott, a junior at the high school and one of the most popular. She sat down on the front steps of the school, having no where else to go. She, Marisa, places her face in her hands and cries. In side pictures flashed on and on in his head of how she looked when he told her. The guilt built up in him and he excused himself and went to go find her. He walked past the front doors and heard someone crying. He looks out the window in the metal door to see her sitting there crying and shivering. The sorrow for what he did welled up so much it grabbed onto his heart and squeezed. Scott opened the door, taking off his coat he placed it on her shoulders. She pulled it off herself and placed it on his lap when he sat down next to her.
Scott handed it back to her and told her to put it back on. They argued for an hour on who would be wearing to coat. There fighting made them sound like and old married couple. Scott ended up winning and Marisa ended up wearing the coat. They sat in silence for a while then she said thank you to Scott and that his coat was very warm. Their eyes would wander towards each other every once in a while. They ended up looking deeply into each others eyes, and as if you mood created it they kisses deeply and passionately. Surprise and horror leapt into their eyes when they realized what they did. They ended up confessing to each other of their feelings, and made a pact with each other. The pact was that when they were in school they would make everyone else believe that they still hated each other, but when together they could hug and hold each other all they want.
The dance was still raging on inside and they could hear the music. He rose to his feet and held out his hand for hers. He asked her to dance and she rose to her feet and taking his hand they began to dance to a slow song. He whispered to her as they danced close to each other. She told him that she wouldnt where his coat to school, but only when they were together. When the dance ended he drove her home. They kissed goodnight and then he drove the few moments down the road. She told her aunt and uncle, they where happy for her. The next day she was surprised to see him sitting in her living room waiting for her to get ready for school. They would see each other in the hallways and just walk by each other. When lunch came they would sit at their tables sometimes calling each other names. They both know that they didnt mean it. By the end if the day he went to his swimming practice and she went to track practice. He would wait for her and would drive her home. They had gone many places together movies, roller skating, and other places.
She had been dying to ask him if she could tell her friend Laura that they were going out. He had been, wanting to tell his friends for a while to. It had been a few months since they have been going out. So the next day at lunch Marisa walked in wearing Scotts coat and was holding his hand. All the occupants of both tables jaws went slack when they saw that. Once they got themselves under control they both hear a fury of questions. Taken back by the questions the tables were joined and Scott and Marisa answered them all. They told them the whole story of how they met and the pact and how all there faces looked when they saw them.
