SHARED SUNSET

Blazing red, filling the sky and tinting the clouds the day cooled as we sat, holding hands and not speaking. There was no need to speak, no need to think. All that had passed through us for so many years blazed as fiercely red as the sunset and was understood. All that had come and gone between us was cooling like the day; our echoes of remembrances of the passion and heat from our earlier time as our own day was near an end.

Behind us were lovers, strolling young and new in their own passion, colored more like the dawn, the beginning. Ahead of us was only the sunset with our memories intensifying the now fading colors, keeping alive the flame that sustained us and fastened us tightly to each other, melted us together into one that was greater than the sum of the two.
