| Songs that Speak to Me Now... | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| One of the many books I've been reading to help get me through this is John Gray's Mars and Venus Starting Over. While more specifically tailored to divorces and death losses, it's been pretty helpful for me too. He talks about the four healing emotions, and the importance of getting in touch with and experiencing them all to help heal your heart. Now, for me, it's very tough to do that, because experiencing all of these emotions makes it all the more real. But I know I have to. So what do I do? I turn to music, one of my perpetual sources of solace. The brain may resist thinking about the pain, but put that playlist on, and I can't help but feel it. I sing along, I listen, I laugh and I cry. Somehow, though, by the time it's all over, I feel a little better. Click the underlined songs for lyrics links. |

| Healing Emotion #1: Anger | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Whitney Houston - It's Not Right, But It's Okay Garbage - Special, Stupid Girl Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff Papa Roach - Last Resort Note: If you listen to this song and relate to the suicide aspect, please please please get in touch with a crisis hotline! Take it from someone who's been down that road, it's not worth it, really! I take the "I can't go on living this way" to mean I can't keep waiting to wake up from this nightmare. Alanis Morissette - The Jagged Little Pill album, just skip tracks 4 and 8. Track 4 just doesn't do it for me, and Head Over Feet is obviously inappropriate! Tori Amos - Anything. Really. Especially Boys for Pele. No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom or Return to Saturn. Especially "Happy Now" on Tragic Kingdom. Britney Spears - Stronger, Don't Go Knockin' On My Door. I'm serious, I know you don't believe me, but just forget about the whole teeny bopper obsession with her. Blaque - As If Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way Creed - Beautiful, What If Ani DiFranco - Sorry I Am Sheryl Crow - Anything But Down |

| Healing Emotion #4: Sorrow | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Healing Emotion #3: Fear | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is the hardest to put into music, since it's so prevalent in feeling...IMO, fear is the easiest emotion to get in touch with post-break up. Unless you're the dumper with the next person lined up (and even then), it's almost impossible not to be scared...Will you ever love again? Will you ever trust again? That's the most predominant feelings for me...I don't need songs to get in touch with it... | Lara Fabian - Broken Vow (yes, I feel it's appropriate in both cases...) Billy Joel - And So It Goes, Got to Begin Again Sarah McLachlan - Full of Grace Sheryl Crow - The Difficult Kind Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans Fleetwood Mac - Landslide |
