North District Hikes

Fort Windham Rocks

Mile 10.4

45 minutes

This is a 0.8 mile round trip to an interesting rock formation. You will need to park at the paved lot at Compton Gap on the east side of the Drive. At the far end of the parking lot, walk around the yellow chain gate and up the dirt road, which is also the A.T. At the trailpost, turn left onto the blue-blazed Dicky Ridge Trail. Walk 300 yards to Fort Windham Rocks, a good example of Catoctin lava formations. Retrace your steps to complete this 45 minute hike.


North Marshall

Mile 15.9

45 minutes

This is a 0.75 mile round trip to a  pleasant view. Park on the paved lot just north of milepost 16. At the far end of the lot, turn left onto the A.T. at the trailpost. You will then walk less than 0.4 mile up the trail to the rocky outcrop on your left. Retrace your steps to complete this 45 minute hike.


South Marshall

Mile 15.9

1-1/2 hour

This 1.6 mile round trip is to a viewpoint. Park in the paved lot just north of milepost 16. At the far end of the parking lot, turn right onto the A.T. at the trailpost. walk down the trail, cross the Drive and continue south on the A.T. Hike over the summit and descend on the trail until it levels out. First level areas offers a small viewpoint. The trail then twists and descends towards the second level area. The overlook is to the right of the trail.  Retrace your steps to complete this 1-1/2 hour hike.


Hogback Overlook

Mile 20.9

20 minutes

this 0.7 mile hike circuit hike is to a viewpoint. Park in the paved lot just south of Hogback Overlook. Walk south along the drive to the A.T. crossing of the Drive and take the A.T. uphill to the viewpoint. If you continue to follow the A.T. until it crosses the Drive at the north end of the overlook and you can enjoy the view alongside the overlook as you return to the parking lot.
