Spirit tales reveal ancient landslides by Tom Simonite
A study of Native American tales of a two-headed serpent spirit has hinted at the potential impact of a fault that lies directly beneath Seattle.
Researchers have been studying stories from the Salish people of the North American west coast about a'yahos, a spirit associated with shaking of the ground and rushing, muddy water. They say the tales are strongly linked to a quake that occurred in AD 900. By tracing the tales to specific locations, they have found evidence of ancient landslides.

Teens accused of Satanist hate crime attack agree to plea deal
Two New York teens avoided jail time for attacking a self-proclaimed "card-carrying" member of the Church of Satan by pleading guilty Tuesday to second-degree assault as a hate crime.
Against the objections of prosecutors, Queens Supreme Court Justice James Griffin sentenced Paul Rotondi, 18, and Frank Scarpinito, 18, to 150 hours of community service and five years' probation for the Jan. 9 attack on Daniel Romano in Maspeth, Queens, a quiet suburb of New York City.
