The quirky three who have been consultants for Scully and Mulder on The X-Files get their own series. But don't expect a sci-fi element, says co-creator Chris Carter, who calls this a comedy-thriller. And it is a hoot as counterculture patriots Byers, Frohike and Langly chug along in an old VW bus, taking pratfalls as they chase stories about conspiracies and evildoers for their struggling underground newspaper. The opener introduces their professional rival Yves Harlow as they investigate the suspicious death of Byers' estranged father, whose work for the Government was deeper than Byers thought.

The Gunmen's inclination to ignore him is offset, however, when they discover electrical implants in Burgess's head. After a false start requiring a bail-out by Yves, their investigation leads to a bombastic electronics retailer, and a love story that Jimmy insists should not be blinded by science.
