Windows Accessories

Every Windows operating system comes with "Windows Accessories." These are helpful applications located in the Accessories submenu (off of the Programs submenu on the Start Menu). Most of these applications are available on every version of Microsoft Windows so once you become familiar with them, you will be able to use them even if you are not familiar with any other programs on a computer. This lesson will cover four basic Windows Accessories: Calculator, Notepad, WordPad and Paint.

Opening a Windows Accessory

To open one of the Windows Accessories, go to the Start Menu, open the Programs (or All Programs on Windows XP) submenu and then the Accessories submenu, then select the application from the list.

Calculator

Calculator Application

Many computers only have one calculating application and that one calculator is this Windows Accessory. It can be very helpful, especially if you are typing a report where a column of numbers needs to be totaled (a budget, for example). Remember that you can use the Calculator's Help feature if you want to learn more about the program.

Practice:

Read all instructions before starting.

1.Resize this lesson window and move it to the top of the screen.

2.Open the Start Menu, go to the Programs submenu and then the Accessories submenu, and select Calculator. If necessary, move the Calculator around on the screen so that you can read these instructions.

3.Click on the following Calculator buttons to perform this mathematical equation: 3  6  /  4  =   (36 divided by 4 equals). Note these buttons: + (addition), - (subtraction), * (multiplication), and / (division).

4.Click on the Calculator button marked "C" to clear the results.

5.Check the Num Lock light for the numeric keypad on your keyboard. If it is on, go to the next step. If the light is off, press the Num Lock key once to turn the numeric keypad on.

6.Press these keys on the numeric keypad: 8  2  *  5  7  Enter   (82 times 57 equals). (If you type the numbers but no numbers appear on the Calculator, press the Num Lock key once and try again.) Notice the results on the Calculator as you press the keys on the Numeric Keypad.

7.Click on the Close ("X") button in the upper right-hand corner of the Calculator to close the Calculator application.

8.Click on this lesson window to return to it and then click on the Maximize button to return the window to its full screen size.
