I Can Teach Myself!  Learning the Computer

(Scroll to the bottom of the page to use a demo of the Beginning lessons.)

I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer is a free, interactive, user-friendly, computer-based training program for teaching students how to use computers. With this program, students can learn how to use the computer without needing a formal teacher - the only "teacher" needed is someone who knows a little more about computers than the student(s). For example, students who have never used computers before will need someone to help them turn on the computer and start the program, then to answer questions and help with problems.

I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer has Beginning and Intermediate lessons with theory, practice, review and testing, plus Advanced lessons that go into more detail about Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint.

I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer is in web-page format, but does not require access to the Internet. Version 2.0 works on desktop computers with Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME and XP - and any web browser that supports forms and frames. The program can be run on laptop computers, but some lessons ("Using the Mouse" and "Keyboard Keys," for example) may not be compatible.

I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer is free. It was created by a Peace Corps Volunteer, Theresa London, who served three years in Kenya (2004-2007). She assessed the needs of her community (the National Youth Service Yatta School of Agriculture and Plant Operators and Mechanics School) and realized the following problems:

  • There is a lack of qualified computer teachers in Kenya
  • Computer classes taught at colleges are too expensive for the average student
  • Kenya colleges only have room for 40% of the graduating high school students per year
  • There are very few computers to learn on, so most standard computer classes do not offer enough hands-on experience
  • Students - most of whom speak English as a third language - need to be able to learn at their own pace

I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer can be downloaded for free as a compressed (.zip) file, but it is very large (60 MB). Click here to download "I Can Teach Myself! Learning the Computer" version 2.0 (60 MB).
