WELCOME TO LONDON LADIES OCTOPUSH CLUB!
1. What is Octopush?
Octopush is a team game played with a puck on the bottom of the swimming pool!
The aim is to score goals in the gullies placed at each end of the pool (see
below). There are 6 in the team with up to 4 substitutes - each player has a
position: forward, mid-field, defence, and yes, there is even a goalie! Substitutions
can be made at anytime and as often as required, but one player must leave the
water completely (including the long fins) before the sub gets in.
| Players wear a mask, snorkel and fins. |
|
|
One team wears white hats and uses white sticks, the other black. |
|
The stick is used for moving the puck across the bottom of the pool, and for flicking
it through the water. |
| A glove is worn on the stick hand for protection. |
2. When was this brilliant game invented?
Over 40 years ago! Unfortunately its not so brilliant for spectators and so
its never become very popular. It was in 1952 that a diver in the Southsea British
Sub-Aqua Club devised the game to keep club members diving fit through the
more inactive winter months - the Octopush season still runs from September to April.
Today, the game is played by as many non-divers as divers, but unfortunately not by as
many women as men.
3. What do you need to join us?
Ideally to be female!! But we do have players of the wrong sex - weve never had to
turn any away (yet!). You should enjoy swimming, and preferably be able to snorkel - some
tuition will be available.
You need to bring a mask, snorkel and fins (if you have none,
ask for a spare set to be brought for you). Most people like to wear a pair
of socks with fins and if youve got an old gardening glove bring that
too!
