On Friday, Toronto FC will be able to select a player from any 10 of the 12
other MLS teams. Teams have been allowed to protect 11 players from their roster
with only one senior international from each team allowed to be left
unprotected. The rosters listed below are based on player salary information
reported annually by the Washington Post. There will inevitably be some
inaccuracies as players have subsequently been traded or released but it
provides a good picture of how the various teams have approached the draft. The
first column of numbers is the players' base salaries, while the second is the
guaranteed salaries with bonuses factored in. Players left unprotected, who are
available for selection, are denoted with an asterisk, while the citizenship of
non-American players is indicated in capitals.
The good news for Toronto FC fans is that, although as is soon obvious by
scanning through the lists below, most of the available players are at the
bottom end of the MLS payscale there do appear to be several legitimate
opportunities to obtain players who can potentially make a genuine impact next
summer. Surprisingly, two Canadian citizens have been left unprotected. The most
obvious slam dunk of a selection is Adrian Serioux of the Houston Dynamo, a 27
year old defender who started for the recently crowned MLS champions in the 2006
playoffs, has played for the Canadian national team 9 times and has recent
European pro experience with Millwall in England. Andy Williams a forward for
Real Salt Lake was born in Toronto tends to be viewed as a journeyman in MLS
terms but has played for Jamaica 82 times including an appearance at the 1998
World Cup finals in France against Croatia. He is 29 years old and has played in
MLS since 1998 after being a standout at the NCAA level.
Three big name players with US national team experience are available, 35 year
old midfielder Tony Sanneh (Chicago Fire), 36 year old forward Cobi Jones (LA
Galaxy) and and 30 year old attacking midfielder Clint Mathis (Colorado Rapids).
They probably do not represent the best value in salary cap terms but it is
worth noting that Clint Mathis the youngest of the three appeared to be in good
form in recent weeks. Several of the more experienced American players left
unprotected may well be selected to enable pre-arranged trades for protected
Canadian players such as Ante Jazic (LA Galaxy), Pat Onstad (Houston Dynamo),
Dwayne de Rosario (Houston Dynamo) and Jack Stewart (Real Salt Lake). Names to
watch for as potential draftees according to posters on Bigsoccer include Calen
Carr (Chicago Fire), Kyle Veris (LA Galaxy) and Chris Gbandi (FC Dallas).
In other roster news there are strong rumours circulating that three players
with Canadian national team experience (in addition to Jim Brennan) have already
been signed and that their identities should finally be announced early next
week. It is worth noting in this regard that Soccer America has speculated that
Marco Reda (Sogndal), Chris Pozniak (Haugesund) and Adam Braz (Montr�al Impact)

Although the name of Greg Sutton is often linked to Toronto FC in articles like
this one, there may be a significant problem in negotiating a transfer fee with
the Montr�al Impact given some of the bitter views previously expressed by Joey
Saputo concerning MLS Canadian expansion and the Toronto stadium deal. If so,
the good news is that several experienced goalkeepers have been left unprotected
in the expansion draft.
In other rumours, there is strong reason to believe that a young unnamed
international forward that Mo Johnston knows from his New York Red Bulls days
has been lined up as the first international allocation signing.
