17.1 There are other occupations available besides the Royal Academy, the Theatre, and of course the Army. Parisian society has a need for doctors and a desire for art. Doctors and Artists can improve their skills at the University of Paris.
Doctors
17.2 Doctors assist in the healing of illness and injury. A doctor has a medical ability (RxA) between 0 and 10. This skill starts at 0 and can be improved at the University of Paris.
17.21 When a doctor is consulted he makes a skill check in the same way an army commander rolls for a battle result. The result is a number from 1 to 6. 1 being an amazing success and 6 being a botched job. If a doctor achieves a favorable result the patient may recover faster, but no doctor can guarantee recovery. Doctor are hired on a weekly basis at 5*RxA in crowns or for whatever arrangements can be made with a PC doctor.
17.22 To modify results for die rolls on illness requires two weeks action on the part of the patient and doctor. Wounds require 1 week. If two attempts are made in the month (4 weeks for illness, 2 weeks for wounds) then the best modifier is used. They are not combined.
17.23 Doctors can study at the University of Paris to improve their skill. Attendance is in three week courses which do not have to be in the same month and cost 50 crowns (for books and the like) payable the first week of the course. Skill improves by .25 per course. Medical skill can only be improved at the University.
Artists
17.3 Artists can be hired to produce fine works or art, which generate status for their owner and the artist when completed. NPC artists cost 2 crowns per skill level per week, but must be hired for at least 4 weeks work. These weeks do not have to be consecutive or in the same month. An artist may work on several pieces at once. PC artists can determine their fees. They exact time that is needed to complete a pieces dependent on the size of the job. A simple work may only require 2 weeks, a masterpiece may take years. When employing an artist the size of the job is determined by the expected status gained from it's completion. The number of SP expected from the work is the number of weeks required to create it.
17.31 The final status gained by the commission is determined by a monthly Artistic Ability check. The skill check adds or subtracts from the final SP or the work. Artists will not reveal the progress of their work as a work that is doing well can be botched later and vice versa. The owner of the work must then show the work at their club or at a private event that he hosts in order to gain status for the work. Artist gain the same status as the host based on the work. Artist can display their work for themselves under the same system without a patron though this takes time away that cannot be used for anything else (like creating another work).
17.32 Artistic Ability is checked in the same way Military ability is checked. It can be improved at the University of Paris in 3 week courses that do not have to be consecutive. The cost is 15 crowns payable the first week of the course and and each course improves the AA by .5 A maximum of 3 levels can be attained in this manner.
17.33 Whenever an AA check is made, if the result is 1 the character gains .25 to his AA. If the result is 6 he loses .25. (Blocked muse)
