Shhhh! It's a copy!!!
Film review by Syed Moosa Reza
Dil Main Chupa Ke Rakhna is the title of an Urdu movie that has been released recently. The film is directed by Imtiaz Qaiser and was long been in the making. Also after completion it was held at the censor board before it could make it to the theatres. The film had run into controversies because of the allegation that it was a local version of an Indian flick 'Yalghar'.
After months of 'detention' and scrutiny by the full board, DMCKR was finally allowed public exhibition, however the chairman Pakistan Film Censor Board refrained from signing the censor certificate only to delay the release for a few weeks more. Well! That was the background, now let's see what the film is all about.
When a film runs into such controversies, it automatically catches public attention and that's exactly what happened to DMCKR. The crowd literally broke into the theatres to see why the movie was detained for such a long time. The hype that surrounded DMCKR definitely drew larger crowd in the theatres initially, but the attendance in the cinemas dropped drastically because of its weak production value and below-average direction.
The list of actors in the film is almost as long as the title. This include Shan, Saima, Rambo, Nirma, Nadeem, Abid Ali, Nayyar Ejaz, Adeeb and Humayun Qureshi. The film begins with Nadeem and Abid Ali who are (believe me) father and son. Abid Ali as Turab Khan is a principled judge and Nadeem is an equally conscientious DSP, Sarfaraz Khan. Nadeem's brother was murdered by Danial (Humayun Qureshi) and he is all set to nab him.
Danial has two sons Kamal (Shan) and Jimmy (Rambo) who are also stepbrothers. Jimmy is fed-up of his father's illegal activities and doesn't live with him anymore while Kamal is aggressive to such an extent that there is hardly any logic behind his acts. Saima is a model girl who is there only to entice Shan, whenever possible and Nirma happens to be Jimmy's darling and also she is Nadeem's deceased brother's daughter. Doesn't all this sound familiar? Yes it does, because exactly all this happened in Feroz Khan's 'Yalghar'.
It was Feroz Khan who was the DSP. Manisha played his brother's daughter, Sanjay Dutt played the angry brat, Naghma played the model and Fardeen Khan played the ethical son of the corrupt politician. Not only the story but also the situations of the songs have also been copied from Yalghar. The song 'Lak patla' was fitted in place of 'Hojata hai kaise pyar' and 'Badlone ka shore' was used in place of 'Akhir tumahin aana hai.' However, the lyrics in Pakistani version are far too obscene as compared to the Indian ones. One could easily guess the lyricist's name after listening to such noisome lines like 'Mera narm badan mera garm badan'. The censor board must have been sleeping all through the movie because there were at least two highly objectionable songs, which seem to have passed either due to their ignorance or some hefty bribe.
Most of the time Shan exhibited Tommy Hilfiger, Versace and other designer collection T-shirts while his counterpart Saima exhibited her 'vitality' quite explicitly. Nirma was even a step ahead of Saima, dancing under a waterfall in body hugging costume. Nirma's bold display of her thorax was merely a desperate attempt to remain in the limelight. Besides nudity, the female cast sported such outfits that could easily qualify for an 'Alien outfit fashion show'. Whoever designed the dresses must have the weirdest of imagination. And Rambo, who didn't want to be left behind in this 'creativity-competition', appeared in a red, glossy blazer over a grey silk shalwar suit with a fluorescent pink dupatta tied around his waist.
The entire cast gave a totally forgettable performance. It was astonishing to see Shan
in such a shallow and meaningless role. As he is ruling the film world, he can sign only
challenging and significant roles if he wants to. Saima, too, seems to be on a signing
spree these days and is minting money at the cost of her career. A few films like these
and she will be doomed forever. Rambo and Nirma are almost out so they shouldn't worry.
Overall Dil Main Chupa Ke Rakhna is nothing but wastage of time and money.
