Dil Deewana Hai: Syed Noor's latest extravaganza

Feature by Syed Moosa Reza

It was a warm summer night when I walked through the parking lot of Lollywood's busiest studio, Evernew. As usual, I was searching for some juicy happenings inside the tinsel world. I was informed that our ace director Syed Noor was busy completing the schedule of his upcoming flick 'Dil Deewana Hai' on 6. As I approached the floor gate, I saw a big Chinese lock at the gate. Surprised to see a locked floor, I asked the gatekeeper if there was really a shooting going on. 'Ji haan Saab,' he replied promptly. 'Aap ko kis say milna hai,' he asked. 'Is Momi here?' I inquired. He nodded and opened the lock for me. It was later revealed that the floor is kept locked, on Syed Noor's orders, just to keep the unrelated persons away.

Passing through the dark passage, as I turned left, I saw a whole new world in front of me. This was no doubt grand, and it certainly didn't look like a set. 'Wow' I said to myself 'What a magnificent set.' Syed Noor was right there busy, preparing a breakfast tray. I could see all sorts of imported juice packs, pineapple tins, strawberries, sandwiches and what not. 'This must be the requirement of the scene,' I thought and moved ahead to have a detailed look at the amazing set. The walls had been given a rocky look. A large wrought-iron bed was placed at the left side of the hall. Elegant arches divided the area into separate portions, a split-level seating area with numerous colorful cushions was spread here and there… and of course, one could see a guitar too.

There was a library of books and videos at one corner, elegant sofas arranged neatly around a fireplace, a painting aisle, with all the necessary art material including paints, brushes and various paintings. Also the whole of the left side of the room was dedicated to a series of wooden cupboards. The set emitted the look of a high class living through each and every decoration piece and its color scheme. While examining the set, I spotted Moammar Rana sitting on one of the chairs, going through the script. He greeted me warmly. I asked him about the film and his role.

'It's a very challenging role that I am doing for the first time. It's the role of a multi-millionaire obsessed lover,' he chuckled. Moammar disclosed that Syed Noor had narrated him this character two years back when they were doing Deewanay Teray Pyar Kay. 'I am very happy because this is my dream role,' he ratified. Elaborating his character, Momi explained that the character of an obsessed lover has been played many times across the border and Shahrukh Khan is considered an authority on such roles. 'That's why I was very much worried about getting out of Shahrukh Khan's shade,' he construed. Moammar is doing the character in a very distinct manner. For the first time he is using gray contact lenses to enhance his character.

Also, instead of those casual T-shirts and jeans, he is using an elegant wardrobe that consists of dress shirts and graceful trousers. With the consent of the director Syed Noor, Momi has developed a mellow voice tone and an apparently nave idiosyncrasy to support his role. I was curious as to why did he accept a negative character? His response was 'I never wanted to be labeled as a hero. I always desired to be remembered as a performer,' he declared. Wishing him best of luck for this film, I moved towards Gia Ali, who was busy chatting on her mobile phone.

Her makeup was tastefully done and in a striped yellow shirt and white trouser she looked gorgeous. As I approached her, she finished her conversation and amiably asked me to sit. As I discussed her character in 'Dil Deewana Hai' I found that she is a very easy-going and down-to-earth person. Hers is a role of a headstrong art student who is in love with a class fellow, Babar Ali. However, Momi secretly loves her and kidnaps her on her wedding night. Now here she is, in his underground penitentiary at his mercy. Gia, too, was all praise for Syed Noor's directional expertise. 'The songs are melodious and Syed Noor is working really hard,' she said.

And why was she away from the movies? I couldn't suppress my curiosity. 'To tell you the truth, I wasn't offered roles that I could accept,' she confessed, 'and they weren't paying me the right amount also,' declared Gia. However, she was quiet optimistic about 'Dil Deewana Hai'. 'I am lucky that again I am working under such a big production banner,' she relished. 'During past two years I have learned a lot about acting and expression from the television plays I have done,' defined Gia. Clarifying her last flop, Gia maintained that if a film bombs, it's the production team that should be blamed and not the artistes.

At this point, Babar Ali stormed the set and his star demeanor dazzled everyone present on the set. Babar is a jubilant guy who mesmerizes his surroundings by his lively presence. With Babar on the set how could one stay aloof, so I approached him for a tryst. Babar too, just like Momi and Gia, seemed excited about this film. He was once again seen with longer hair. He cheerfully admitted that he has sworn not to cut his Samson appeal anymore. Babar was there only for a short visit as his scenes were scheduled in the next shift.

Meanwhile, Syed Noor had finished preparing the breakfast tray and the shot was ready. This was a dialogue between Fauzi (Moammar) and Romessa (Gia). The scene was okayed after a few rehearsals. Syed Noor was indeed taking care of minute details regarding the movie. After a particular scene, he would sit in a quiet corner and write the dialogues and trivialities of the next scene. Finally, I approached the first-rate director and asked him about this venture.

Syed Noor revealed that the main idea of Dil Deewana Hai is derived from a Hollywood flick 'The Collector,' and Moammar is doing the title role. It is a high budget film being produced by the 'Jeeva's' fame producer Jamshed Zafar Naqvi. Besides Momi and Gia, the film also features Babar Ali and Nadeem. Syed Noor himself pens it and the music is by M. Arshad. Also the leading photographer Khawar Riaz is doing Gia Ali's makeup and grooming. I was curious about who the set designer was and to my utmost surprise, it turned out to be none other than Syed Noor himself. Noor, like the rest of the cast, was quite hopeful about the film. He could be seen engulfed in minuscule details and I could smell that something great is coming up.
