Wednesday report

The first of two qualifying sessions took place at Le Mans, France today in preparation for this weekend’s 73rd 24 Heures du Mans. The RML MG Lola EX264 completed a number of trouble free laps at the hands of co-drivers Tommy Erdos, Mike Newton and Warren Hughes.
With rain steadily growing heavier during the afternoon the team decided to use the 7-9pm daylight session to carry out a full system check of the car as well as complete some wet weather running. Warren was the only driver to complete laps in the first half of the session (7-9pm) during which time he tried two different tyre options and the team optimized its real time telemetry system to improve data transfer.

The session was interrupted by a red flag period when a similar Lola chassis crashed on the wet surface ending up on the outside of the barriers on the Mulsanne Straight. When the session resumed Warren completed another two laps before returning to the pits to prepare for the night session from 10-12pm.
The second half of qualifying continued in wet conditions and with no chance of significant lap time improvements the team concentrated on ensuring all three drivers completed their mandatory night time laps. Although the running was limited in this first qualifying session all three drivers reported that the car was performing well with a good balance in the tricky conditions.

Intersport Racing is returning this weekend to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans to defend their 2004 P2 class victory. The team is returning with two entries for this year's event. The familiar American Le Mans contending Lola-AER will be teamed with a Courage-AER.
"Lola and Courage have provided the team with excellent race cars for this year's race," exclaimed 2004 Le Mans class winner Clint Field. "To win a 24 hour race is very hard. We know how to win, but luck is also needed."

The team has put together an outstanding international driver lineup for the 2005 race.
The #32 Lola entry will consist of Gregor Fisken, Great Britain, Liz Halliday, United States, and Sam Hancock, Great Britain.
The #33 Courage entry will consist of Sergey Zlobin, Russia, Bastien Briere, France, and Juan Barazi, Denmark.
"At the recent test day, the drivers were really quick out of the box," stated Field. "We have very good cars and should contend for the class win again."
Halliday and Fisken return to the Intersport team as they did at the 2005 12 Hours of Sebring. "It is great for the team to have such a strong driver lineup for this race," stated Field.

Thursday report

The second and final qualifying session for this year's 24 Heures du Mans took place in Le Mans, France this evening with the RML MG Lola EX264 securing an 8th row grid position.

During Thursday the team fitted its race engine and transmission as part of its final preparations for the 24 hours. Having completed their mandatory night laps on Wednesday evening all that remained for this second qualifying session was to complete a systems check and post a dry weather time to claim their spot on the starting grid.
All three team drivers, Tommy Erdos, Mike Newton and Warren Hughes drove this evening and enthused about the cars performance in the dry weather, Tommy finally posted a qualifying time of 3:46:205, securing the team 3rd place in the LMP2 class.

Tommy's second and last flying lap of this year's Le Mans qualifying was clearly quicker with the team telemetry showing him two seconds faster than his previous best before he encountered traffic towards the end of the lap.
With no track activity taking place on Friday the team will now carry out a final thorough check of the race car components and spare parts. The drivers will take part in a number of PR activities including the official Grand Parade des Pilotes through Le Mans town centre during the evening.

Report

Pescarolo led the way during the warm-up session in preparation for today's 24-hour race at Le Mans.
The #16 Pescarolo Sport C60 Judd driven by Eric Comas, Jean Christophe Boullion and Emmanuel Collard completed 9 laps and set a fastest time of 3m 37.042s around the 13.650km circuit. The car was one of the first out on the circuit but started pushing hard in the second half of the session to go fastest. The sister car of Sebastien Loeb, Eric Helary and Soheil Ayari finished in fourth place.

The Champion Racing Audi R8 pair finished in second and third places with the #3 car of JJ Lehto, Marco Werner and Tom Kristensen a couple tenths ahead of the #2 of Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Allan McNish. Both cars took to the track at the very start of the session, ran quickly throughout and completed 11 laps each - more than any other car. McNish suffered a moment when he went straight on at Ralentisseur Playstation early in the session but was able to rejoin.

The Intersport Racing Lola AER of Sam Hancock, Liz Halliday and Gregor Fisken was fastest in the LM P2 class with the Kruse Motorsport Courage Judd of Tim Mullen, Ian Mitchell and Phil Bennett right behind. Aston Martin headed the GT1 class with the car of David Brabham, Stephane Sarrazin and Darren Turner, and the Alex Job Racing Porsche GT3-RSR driven by Mike Rockenfeller dominated the GT2 class with a series of strong laps midway through the session.

All 49 cars took to the track during the session although the Rollcentre Racing Dallara LMP900 Nissan of Michael Krumm pitted at the end of its installation lap with smoke coming out of the engine. The Larbre Competition Ferrari 550 Maranello of Patrice Goueslard stopped on it's first lap out of the pits at the exit of Tertre Rouge with a mechanical problem and also the Raymond Narac Posrsche GT3-RSR of Romain Dumas went off at the exit of Indianapolis on its second flying lap.

The Petersen Motorsports / White Lightning Racing Porsche GT3-RSR returned to the circuit after suffering a big accident in qualifying. The car had suffered substantial damage to its front and had to be taken away to a Porsche repair facility that night, but returned to the paddock on Friday evening and the team finished rebuilding the car at 2.30am local time. The car completed three laps at the hands of Jorg Bergmeister and was running second its class but returned to the pitlane with a leak in a radiator pipe.

The Gerard Welter WR LMP2 car, driven by Sylvain Boulay, suffered a heavy twitch and subsequent spin at the exit of Virage de Mulsanne and pulled off the circuit in the closing minutes of the session, and the Jim Matthews's JMB Racing Ferrari 575 GTC crawled back to the pitlane with a right-front puncture. Also the Jim Gainer International Dome Mugen of Ryo Michigami, Seiji Ara and Katsutomo Kaneichi ran through the gravel at the end of the session but rejoined.

Race Report

The No.25 RML MG Lola EX264 won the LMP2 class of the 24 Heures du Mans today after a punishing race that saw problems plague the team from the opening lap. All three drivers Tommy Erdos, Mike Newton and Warren Hughes drove superbly throughout the race, never letting the class win leave their sights.

The pace of the MG was so competitive that despite a number of unscheduled and extended pit stops each driver was able to recover lost ground in record time and maintain the fastest class lap throughout the race. Coupled with a real battle of determination from the team it proved a winning combination which any amount of problems couldn't beat.

With the car's reliability being an asset in all previous tests it was frustrating to experience problems as early as lap one. During the opening hours of the race the team resolved a cooling system problem which had put the MG to the back of the grid and also replaced a gear change compressor. As day turned to night the team were to get little rest when an electrical glitch caused the transmission to stick and Mike was forced to pit early. Warren took his race debut in the MG as the evening progressed and delighted the team with an outstanding triple stint, setting a new fastest lap on the way.

Much ground had been lost in the first six hours of the race but by 2am Tommy handed the car to Mike for his second stint in 3rd position in class. With track temperatures cooling and the MG really showing its potential Mike completed a double stint where he regularly lapped significantly quicker than the front running class rivals and kept the MG 's time in contention with the top six cars on track.

Warren was behind the wheel for the final stint of the night time running and had set a new fastest lap for the MG with a time of 3m47.601s. His progress was hampered as dawn broke however when a clutch fitting snapped and forced the team to carry out an extended pit stop. He continued with no recurrent problems before pitting for Tommy to take over.

Driving another very competitive stint Tommy claimed the class lead before pitting for Mike to take over. As the race approached the 20th hour Mike was keen to continue the good work of his co-drivers but was forced to pit just as his stint began with a broken layshaft bearing. Forty five minutes of track time was lost while the team worked tirelessly to get him back on track. His stint appeared jinxed as he then had a puncture on his out lap but after a tyre change he soon got up to pace and pulled back 3rd in class before handing the car to Warren for his final drive of the day.

Warren, who appeared to have been spared most of the problems which were to plague the team, completed another double stint and regained 2nd position before handing the car over for Tommy to take to the chequered flag.

With a class win within their grasp the team held their breath as Tommy went back out on track but more misfortune was about to come their way when a suspension failure forced him into a multiple spin approaching the Ford chicane. Amazingly he avoided contact with the barriers and managed to get the car to the pits where the team carried out a lightening speed corner change which enabled Tommy to rejoin with a podium still within his grasp.

The team's fortunes were about to change when the leading LMP2 car spun and thus gave the MG the class lead. A careful strategy was quickly put in place that saw Tommy lap steadily to conserve fuel and thus enabled him to take the class win for a well deserving team.
