R.M.L. Race report
Ray Mallock Limited (RML) demonstrated the race winning
potential of its MG EX257 LMP675 prototype, with a strong showing at the well
supported inaugural Le Mans 1000km race over the weekend. The MG EX257, which
had been the subject of extensive development work by the team, made its
presence felt from its arrival in France. During qualifying the car secured an
impressive class pole and set fourth fastest time overall. The MG's time was
almost half a second quicker than its normally aspirated Judd powered sister
car the Intersport Lola - which had taken a class victory at Petit Le Mans last
month. Behind the wheel of the MG was the 2003 FIA GT pairing of Brazilian
Thomas Erdos and Mike Newton - also the car's owner - who were joined by
McLaren development driver Chris Goodwin.
In the race proper, the MG took a few laps to settle down in the very wet
conditions at the start, particularly without the advantage of the traction
control fitted to some of the front runners. A spin on the first lap dropped
the car from 4th to 20th but Erdos soon started to climb back up the leader
board. An unscheduled stop early on to deal with a 'long' brake pedal then cost
almost five laps.
The MG rejoined at the back of the field, but swiftly clawed its way back,
consistently lapping in the top three overall and fastest in class. The car had
just retaken third position in class, still running on wets on a drying track,
when a totally unexpected transmission failure sidelined the car for good.
Phil Barker, Operations Director at RML and Team Manager for the MG Project
said: "We are delighted with the way the car performed over the weekend and
in the end we were extremely unlucky not to finish at least in the top three in
class. What was really encouraging despite our misfortunes was the way that the
lap time for the MG fell throughout testing and the official qualifying period.
There is certainly much more to come, and we will be hoping to build on the
data we've collected from this outing to good effect the next time we run the
MG and, hopefully, translate this into a concrete result."
The Taurus Sports Lola B2K/10b of Phil Andrews/Justin Keen and
Giovanni Lavaggi finished in 9th position overall in the race
after setting a time in qualifying good enough for the second row of the grid.
An equally impressive and eventful race saw both the team’s British drivers -
Phil Andrews and Justin Keen overcome spins, a puncture and a broken driveshaft
on the final lap to finish the gruelling 1000kms event. Andrews, who started
the race in the Judd powered B2K/10B, described the treacherous conditions and
his combative drive in the early stages of the race. “It was so treacherous in
the first hour because the track was more greasy than completely wet,” he said.
“I was cautious at the start but soon the tyres came up to their optimum
temperature and the car felt absolutely perfect. Despite a quick spin at the
hairpin, I think that I gained a decent platform for what was a great result
for the team, which we can now take forward in to the 2004 season.”
The Intersport RacingTteam of Jon Field/Duncan Dayton and Larry Connor finished
2nd in the LMP675 category after a dramatic race saw the team
cope with rear end damage from an early incident and a subsequent battery
change when they were poised to challenge for the class victory. To compound
the team’s poor luck during the race, they suffered no less than 3 punctures.
Jon Field started the race and immediately built a strong lead in the LMP675
class during the early running when he completed an heroic triple stint. Field
bravely elected to be the first of the 46 starters to switch to slicks as the
damp track dryed during the 3rd hour. However, after an
altercation with the Panoz GTP car during the 1st hour, the Lola’s rear
bodywork became loose. Despite this, Field was the quickest man on the track at
one stage and was the first to break in to the 1m40 second bracket. After Field
handed over the driving duties to Larry Connor at the 3 hour mark, the LMP 675
lead became a battle between the Lola and the Courage Competition C65 of Roman
Rusinov/Wim Eyckmans and Enrico Muscioni. Sadly, the B160 was forced to have a
change of battery and Field’s gallant team had to accept 2nd in
LMP675 and 7th overall. “It was a frustrating end to the
weekend,”said Field after the race. “We seemed to lose the set-up somewhere
since we tested here during the week and the car was not as strong in the wet
as we know it can be. However, it has been a great way to end a successful
season with this great car and we very much look forward to coming back here
next June.”
After qualifying on a superb pole position in the LMP675 category on Saturday,
the RML Ltd team had high hopes for the race. After losing some places in the
early running after a spin, Erdos soon began making inroads in to the top 12
overall but the Brazilian began to experience gearbox problems that eventually
led to retirement at 2hrs and 14 minutes. “It has been a very worthwhile
weekend in terms of gaining experience of the car, especially for myself and we
are delighted to have been so quick, so soon,” said prototype debutant Mike
Newton. “We plan to be here next June and the more events like this we take
part in, the better prepared we will be to challenge for a top position.”
