T616 specification |
Mainly based on previous chassis T610 ( chassis and aerodynamics ), but devoted to the Light class, the T616 had a far more sucessful carrier
Impressed by a succession of good results, in IMSA as well as at Le Mans, some competitors began to take an interest in this rotary engine, the butt of so much criticism in its early days but now seen to have some virtues after all. For example, Jim Busby, asked by the American manufacturer BF Goodrich to set up a World Championship team, chose to install the inexhaustible twin-rotor 13B in the two Lola T616 chassis he had just bought.
The decision repaid him forthwith with a C2 category (the new name for the old category C Junior) win at Monza. And so at Le Mans there was American opposition for the Mazdaspeed team, which entered two 727Cs, updates of the 1983 model. The cars had revised aerodynamics (among other things, to reduce ground effect), but unfortunately they still had an engine whose output was only 320bhp. They put up a tremendous fight. Until nightfall they were grouped together, but then the Busby, Knoop & Hayje car had suspension and exhaust problems. Advantage Mazda? Not really, because in the early hours the 727C of David Kennedy and the Martin brothers dropped back. Soon afterwards, Terada,Yorino and Dieudonnd lost ground. In the end, honour was saved, thanks to an American team and a British chassis; in the winning car was Yoshimi Katayama, famous for having driven Mazdas all his competitive life.
