OK, I also LOVE to read. Right now I like to live vicariously through trashy romance novels, but every now and then my brain sends me an alarm warning me of brain rot. (This alarm also goes off when I've been watching too much MTV). Back in '98 I happened to pick up a book entitled Outlander (by Diana Gabaldon) my mom had gotten from a book club and read the synopsis. I was interested. You can imagine how overjoyed I was when I found out there were three (later four and soon to be five) more books in the series. I highly recommend this series. They really don't fit into any sort of genre. It's historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy, scandal, everything. The basis of the story is that just after WWII, a woman happens to "fall" into a crevice in these stones in Scotland while on vacation and mystically gets transported back to the 1740's just before the second Jacobite uprising in Scotland. Fate causes her to meet (and later marry) a striking, red-haired Highlander, and she must choose to go back to her previous life or stay in the one she's in now. And well, there's more, but the plot gets pretty intricate, especially in the later books. For a good read filled with smut AND quality writing, go for these. These books actually caused me to have a bit of a Scottish fetish now. I like the tall, rough-looking men; it's even better with an accent. I also like to think I'm one of those deep thinkers, even though I'm really not. I get frustrated thinking too much about any of the following subjects: time, eternity, reality, color, existence, the mind, nothing, etc. I certainly have opinions of these subjects, but sometimes I just need something concrete in front of me like a bologna sandwich. Anyway, I'm really interested in the concept of relativity. I just finished A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. It talks a lot about relativity, black holes, light speed, etc. The whole idea just makes my mouth water. I actually got turned on watching a special on Albert Einstein. What can I say, I have a weakness for geeks.
Another book I've read is Anam Cara a book of Celtic wisdom. The book itself actually isn't that great; it repeats a lot and I don't know if there's a lot of back up to the author's ideas--they tend to be based on New Agism mostly. But I like the way it makes me think and kind of puts a new perspective on things, kind of like when I read the Bible (although I shouldn't even compare the two books).
I am currently reading The Clan of the Cave Bear. Another good read so far. It really gets into distiguishing the differences between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons within an actual story. It's also kind of a girl power book too. |
