| can't remember I've seen aborigines in Sydney, but I HAVE seen them in Townsville. What hit me the most was the alcoholism amongst the aboriginals, the indifference of the "European" Aussies, the lack of contact between the 2 different Australian groups and therefor the terrible isolation of the aborigines in their own country! When I sat down on a terrace of a pub and I started to role a cigarette from my Dutch tobacco, often an aborigine asked me if he |

| could have one too or they just asked for cigarette papers. Of course, I said (1 packet of Drum did cost me AU$ 20.00 (bunch of thieves, the Australian govt. that is). I was criticised immediately by every "European" Aussie who overheard that: "Don't give it to him. You don't know what you're doing! They will come back again, watch it for them, etc.! Sometimes I got angry with the "European" Aussies : hey, you stole their country, the least you can do is giving them a cigarette! Then the European Aussies looked at me in a very funny way: huh?? Or they said something like:"Crazy European" or "Crazy Dutch" or "Crazy woman". The Aborigines never bothered me. |
