Kiwi The Duck |
Joe worked at a local pre-school, and decided to hatch chicken eggs in an incubator as an educational experience for the children. Three eggs out of 36 didn't hatch, and the unfeeling and rather ignorant director wanted to dispose of them, but I had a strong feeling that we should give them just one more weekend. Monday morning when I came in to check on them, there was an itty-bitty duckling freshly hatched from one of the eggs!! I immediately scooped her out of the incubator, and oohed and aahed over how cute she was. I was hooked, and having imprinted on me, so was Kiwi. She followed me everywhere, and being very pregnant at the time certainly made us a sight to see. We then found a woman who makes duck diapers, and since duck poop is rather icky, we ordered one. |

Kiwi on the coffee table |

Kiwi took to the diaper immediately, and even allowed us to take her for walks with a leash attached to a hook on the diaper/harness. She loves to nibble bare toes to the dismay of all sandal-wearing guests, and begs whenever we eat. There's something very amusing about a duck head peering at you over the edge of the coffee table, earning Kiwi the nickname "duckshark". |

Kiwi wearing her diaper.... The part under her behind holds a pad that gets changed periodically. It goes around her neck, (you can barely see the snap between her shoulders) and in the front it resembles leiderhosen, while there is a single strap down the back between her wings, attaching to a cross strap over her tail. It sounds confusing, but works wonderfully!! Especially since we discovered that nursing pads (the ones you wear in your bra when you breast-feed) fit the diaper perfectly! Kiwi is at times a royal pain-in-the-butt, but I love her anyway. |
