"Kathy and the Chocolate Bar"

«:*´`³¤³´`*:»§« Lois Caywood Guffy«:*´`³¤³´`*:»

I used to take all of our children to a little Country Style Church at Byron, OK and after church was out, I would take all of them to the grocery store where most of the small congregation stopped before going home.

I always made special Easter dresses for the four girls which were accented by white gloves purses, hats and patent shoes. One particular Easter Day I warned the girls especially, not to choose anything that might stain their new dresses.

Our little Kathy was about two years old and an usually quiet and agreeable little girl, but on this particular Sunday she decided she wanted a chocolate covered ice cream bar and asked me to get her one. I told her not that day, because she might ruin her pretty dress. Kathy puckered up and sobbed softly and walked away. I purchased sandwich material for our lunch and when I was about ready to leave for home, I told the children to go to the car and "load up" ahead of me, so we could save some time. When I got into the car I asked if everyone was in the car and ready to go.

All chimed in unison, "yes" and I drove the two miles home. The kids ran into the house to take off the fancy clothes and one by one they were coming back to the kitchen to eat.

I was standing in the kitchen when I heard a knock on the screen door and turned to see my neighbor looking in, and laughing as she said "Lois, did you forget something ?" I looked about and said "Oh no, did I leave it a kid?" She said "you sure did!" I went out to their car and there sat Kathy on the husband's lap pouting and not about to get out. They told me they just happened to find her sitting on the floor, hiding behind the ice cream box, arms folded and pouting.

After that day, I made sure that it was "I" who counted the 8 children.
