The Langan Families

Hugh Langan was born in Donegal County, Ireland in 1850. His brother, James A. Langan, was born two years later. They are the sons of James Langan and Anna Sweeny.

This branch of the family came to America in 1856 and after a brief stop in Pennsylvania, came to Clinton County, Iowa and settled near the town of DeWitt. The two boys prospered early in life and in 1879 they moved part of their operation to Crawford County, near Vail, Iowa.

In 1884 they established their land and cattle business in Centerville, South Dakota with 3,000 acres in Turner and Clay counties, which was increased to 7,000 acres.

In 1885 Hugh Langan represented Turner and Clay counties in the Territorial Legislature.

As time went by, James A. Langan took over the South Dakota part of their business interests. In 1888 he married Mary E. Glynn, daughter of Thomas and Anna Glynn of Scott County, Iowa, which is the next county south of Clinton.

Children of James A. Langan and Mary Elizabeth Glynn:

The two Langan brother also had sisters who also came to Centerville, Mrs. Dan Logue, Sr. (Susan Langan), Mrs. Anthony Molseed (Bridget Langan), Sr., and Mrs. James (Hugh) Costello (Mary Langan).
