Jan Jirovec and Mary Jirovec

Jan (John) Jirovec was born June 24, 1835 in Nevolice near Domazlice, Dist. of Plzen, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. Jan Jirovec married Mary Jirovec in Bohemia. Although they had the same last name they were in no way related.

Mary Jirovec was born February 25, 1847 in Spanov near Domazlice, Dist. Of Plzen, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. Jan and Mary were the parents of twelve children, in the following paragraphs 10 of their twelve children are mentioned. The other two girls died at very young ages, and their names and birthdates are not known.

In 1881 Jan and Mary and their four children decided to leave their homeland and come to America in company of Jiri (George) Kulhanek and Katerina (Vitek) Kulhanek and Peter Vogltanz (now spelled Vogeltance and Mary (Kulhanek) Vogltanz and their families. George Kulhanek and his sister, Mary Kulhanek Vogltanz were cousins to Mary Jirovec Jirovec.

After they arrived in America they all traveled to Chicago to visit Mary Jirovec's sister, Anna (Jirovec) Pajdar and her family. After a few months later, the immigrant group traveled to Nebraska where the Kulhanek and Vogltanz families settled near Dodge. The Jirovec family traveled further south and homesteaded in Sauders County, near Morse Bluffs, Nebraska.

While they lived in Saunders County they had eight more children:

The family lived in Saunders County for 10 years and passed through many days of hardships, bitterness, and sorrow for it was during those trying years that two of their children, Anna and Joseph died.

In 1891 they decided to move to Colfax County and purchased a farm four miles southeast of Clarkson, Nebraska. While living there they had a daughter:

In 1907 Jan and Mary retired from farming and moved to Clarkson and purchased the John Hamernik residence in the south part of town. Jan and Mary were charter members of the S.S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic church in Clarkson.

Jan Jirovec died October 20, 1914 and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Clarkson. Mary Jirovec Jirovec died January 16, 1937 and is buried beside her husband.
