| HEADBANGERS' BILL OF RIGHTS |
| Many counsellors who work with clients who experience difficulties in standing up for themselves often advocate an 'assertiveness bill of rights' which outlines their personal rights and freedoms, and what rights they are entitled to exercise. I have devised an 'assertiveness' Bill of Rights for headbangers, which outlines the personal rights and freedoms that all lovers of Heavy Metal Music (both bands and fans) should be entitled to excercise, without hurting those of 'non-metallers' or coming under fire unnecessarily. Here they are: |
Metal Right #1 I have the right to be the judge of what I do and what I think. Example #1 I have the right to be the judge of what bands I choose (and choose not) to listen to. Metal Right #2 I have the right to offer no reasons or excuses for my behaviour. Example #2 I have the right to wear my favourite Cannibal Corpse t-shirt (if I wish) without having to explain myself to others. Metal Right #3 I have the right to make mistakes. Example #3 I have the right to have (or not to have) tattoos, body piercings, my hair dyed green - because it is I who will have to face the consequences of doing so (or not doing so). Metal Right #4 I have the right to make my own decisions. Example #4 I have the right to quit my day job and join a band - even if my parents may hate it (providing I can face the consequences of that decision). Metal Right #5 I have the right to say, 'I don't know'. Example #5 I have the right to say, 'I don't know WTF Bardot are' or 'I don't know why you don't listen to Judas Priest'. Metal Right #6(66) I have the right to say, 'I don't understand'. Example #6(66) I have the right to say, 'I don't understand why you listen to that disco shit'. Metal Right #7(77) I have the right to say, 'I don't care'. Example #7(77) I have the right to say, 'I don't care what you trendies think of me'. Metal Right #8 I have the right to say 'no' without feeling guilty. Example #8 I have the right to say 'no' to a date with a creepy non-metaller/homeboy guy without feeling guilty. Metal Right #9 I have the right to refuse to be responsible for other people's problems. Example #9 I have the right to refuse to take the blame if a teenager kills oneself after listening to my music (if I am in a band) - JUDAS PRIEST, METALLICA and BLACK SABBATH all exercised that right VERY EFFECTIVELY!!!! Metal Right #10 I have the right to change my mind. Example #10 I have the right to change my mind to change my mind as to what band or genre I like the most - especially since there are so many new bands and styles of music that are emerging from the scene. |
