Saturday, 24 November 2001 (to be exact) After having finished my Psychology exams, I had little else on my plate. So I decided to head off down to Bexley to see four bands play at the Forest Inn: Subterfuge, Fury, Dungeon (the band I most wanted to see because Mark played them several times on Smacked About) and Abortus (the band which was headlining the show and were about to take off to Europe). I was greeted by Gorgy (Gorgoroth of Baltak and Battlegod Productions), who was (as usual) flogging his CDs near the door. The first band on the bill was Subterfuge, from Maitland (in the lovely Hunter Valley). They sounded very much like Anthrax (to me) and THEY REALLY ROCKED!!
The next act was Fury from Adelaide - a very late eighties or early-90's sounding like a cross between Obituary and Possessed. Here is a pic I took of them when I was in one of those bar stools that required a bit of a balancing act to sit in.
Next on the bill was Dungeon, one of my recent favourite Aussie power metal bands (second to Pegazus and AC/DC). They kicked off the show with the track, 'No Way Out' and covers of Accept's 'Fast as a Shark' and Iron Maiden's 'Prowler'. I went to the front to 'have a bit of a headbang' (as Daniel from Liverpool would put it - Hi Daniel!). I then leaned against what I thought was a wall, only to find it moved a little and that it was vibrating - and then to find out I was leaning against the amp stack!!! Still, Dungeon really WENT OFF and I would have no hesitation in seeing them play the next time there is a gig with them on the bill.
Last but not least, Abortus were on stage. The purpose of their gig was to celebrate the release of their CD 'Process of Elimination' and because it was their final gig before going off to Europe. The lead singer, Jack, has a growly style of vocals not unlike Obiturary and Morbid Angel. Dave from Macquarie Fields (a lister of The Dead End and Smacked About by Mark on 2rrr) managed to get onstage himself and show the rest of the audience what he was made of. And, of course, Daniel of Liverpool himself was 'having a good headbang'. Included was a cover of AC/DC's 'TNT'. As the Prawn man said in his review, 'Europe had better look out!'
STUFF I LIKED AND DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE FOREST INN LIKE 1. Good Aussie Metal Bands play there. 2. A lot of Aussies attend the gigs. 3. My friends (from 2rrr) go there regularly. 4. It is easy to get there by public transport. 5. I am familiar with the area - I used to go to school at Kingsgrove and live at Brighton le Sands. DISLIKE 1. It is TOO DARN HOT inside. 2, It is too far away from where I live at present. |
