Article Review:  'P-Plates can be a Police Magnet' by Lisa Capozzi
(Taken from the North Shore Times, Wednesday, Feb 25, 2004, page 15)

This article argues whether or not young drivers (many of who are 'p-platers') get picked on by police, and whether or not they are really 'sitting duck's for police officers.

One respondent in this article, Millie, believed that they were 'Police Magnets'.  She offered two reasons for this:

Firstly, they are still learning, even though they already have their licences, and therefore still likely to make more mistakes than more experienced drivers.

Secondly, many 'P-platers' tend to drive too fast, or in this wee hours of the morning, 'showing off' in front of their friends.

Other respondents states that they, as 'P-platers', didn't get 'picked on' or that they ones that did don't always do the right thing (and one of these respondents said she avoided them for that very reason).

Then Ms Capozzi suggested that if P-platers didn't want to get picked on, they should not have others something to talk about.  They can try to drive safely and courteously, be polite, stick to the speed limit and avoid driving certain types of cars.

However, she also suggests that if P-platers do get picked on unfairly, they should (by all means) stand up for themselves.

I also agree with her, everyone should try (as much as possible) to do the right thing:  P-platers included.  However, it is not the P-platers themselves I object to, but car hoons.  Most of these are young males, who look and dress a certain way and drive certain types of cars and shout things at mostly young women.  Guys, you know who you are, we women are not in the least bit impressed with your antics and I suggest you do something to improve yourselves, or you will all be 'sad and lonely singles' for the rest of your lives!!!!
