Day 1
Yes, I know.
Genealogies are so boring and who wants to know who begat who. How could the
genealogies possibly have anything to do with understanding the
bible?
In chapters 1 & 2, we said that getting to know something about the
writers of each book and something of its main characters would help us to
understand the role the book played in the whole scheme of the bible. These
genealogies not only help us to know who these important characters were, but
they also demonstrate God’s ability to use someone who was less than perfect for
His honor and glory. Compare (Joshua
2:1-24) with (Matthew
1:5)
and (Hebrews
11:31; James 2:25). God used this
prostitute and her family and made them instrumental in the defeat of Jericho.
Not only did God reward her by sparing her and her family (Joshua
6:17-25), but He also made
her a part of the genealogy of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
God used the genealogies of the Old Testament to
prove the link between Abraham and the Children of Israel. He used them to prove
He kept His promise to Abraham. Then God used the genealogies of the New
Testament to further prove to us today that He not only linked Jesus to Abraham
and David physically as He promised to do, but He also linked us today as
Christians to Abraham and David spiritually.( Matthew
1:1-16).
You should remember reading the book of Ruth as
an assignment in chapter 1. Guess who is in the linage of Jesus (Matthew
1:5).
Again God used someone outside His chosen people to become a part of our
spiritual heritage through Christ, not to show his power (which it does), but to
show His compassion for those who love Him.
It’s hard for us to understand how such boring
reading can be so important to our salvation and our walk with God to eternity,
but they are. For us to understand God, we must study these genealogies and find
every message He enclosed in them for us.

Bible Readings:
I know this is a lot, but the blessing you will
receive is worth the extra reading.
