I am a new English Teacher at Tallulah Falls School.
This is Susan, Ashton, and Morgan, my family.
They are the reason for all things beautiful in my life.
Together we have accomplished great things, and
it is my great privilege to reach out to the “Light in
the Mountains,” TFS. We are looking forward to
a great learning adventure.
Biographical Information
I was born in Pickens, SC on September 23, 1971. I grew up a railroader;
I would trace my father’s footsteps while he worked 3rd shift. His
friend, Calvin Cox, taught me to drive the yard engine up and down the
switchyard where they build trains--one boxcar at a time. I remember the day I
stood straining as I finally was big enough throw a switch to change the tracks
all by myself. I thought, All this would be unnecessary if only trains had steering wheels.
My father also had a trucking company (that’s two trucks), and I saw the rolling hills of Virginia, the Windy City, the Big Apple, Motor City, as I saw the eastern United States from the elevated perspective of a "Big Rig".
Kurtis Leon Davis, my brother, was born with
severe Down Syndrome; he was God’s gift to us. He taught us the meaning of
love, even while we were beaten down with the prejudice and ignorance of
others. It is the force driving me to dispel ignorance, especially my own. Kurt passed over to the other side on March 29, 1999. Now, he hears no laughter, save his own.I live my life the best I can in hope we may meet again.
Two weeks after I passed my Black Belt test in Tae
Kwon Do, the Russians shot a great man out of the sky, Master Billy Hong, my instructor. He
was on Korean Airliner, Flight 007 (Larry McDonald, a famous Georgia politician
was on that flight, too). At this same time, I moved to Georgia. Billy Hong
taught me the discipline and reward of perseverance, so I try with
everything I own.
One year later, I am in Habersham County, living
like Huck Finn on the bank of the Chattahoochee River. I had Lacy, my faithful
dog; my canoe; and thousands of acres of Chattahoochee Valley forest to roam
and miles of river to call my own. I love the American landscape; therefore, my favorite American authors are Steinbeck, Cooper, and Clemens.
I joined the Boy Scouts of America and received my
Eagle Scout Award. This badge represents many unique and epic adventures that
scouting has brought to my doorstep. All I did was step through. Recognizing rites of passage as markers along life's journey is an important part of creating history.
I met my wife, Susan, at Habersham Central High
School. We were in the same math class. It was hopeless; we fell in love—like
in the fairy tales. We had a small wedding and began our life together, putting
God first in all things. That is why I teach others the necessity of living
right and true.
Since that time, we have built houses together,
coached one another through college, and built our lives around two beautiful
children, Ashton and Morgan. We love learning and sharing discovery with
others. This desire to share experience is why we are both teachers.
Ashton is my hero. He would rather read than eat!
He is a budding young writer. He is a sophomore in name only.
Morgan is my hero. She is wonderful with animals
(she has too many) and has an amazing ability to know people.
Our pet ensemble is Einstein, a Labrador-Pit
mongrel, and he "in the graveyard lies"; Copper, a registered Golden Retriever; Sassy and Kono, two twin cats;Carla, a box turtle named; and a guinea pig named Anastasia. We are minus a half-dozen cats; a dozen guineas; a dozen bantam chickens; one crazy Easter hen(Uhm! Rooster) named Eli(zabeth); and one Rhode Island Red named John Henry.
While life has been much richer than this brief
sketch, today, I am at the doorway of a new and great adventure, and my task
and title is English Teacher. I hope it proves as adventurous as life has
proven to me so far.
