DaCosta Woltz of Galax, Virginia was a city mayor and a patent medicine
salesman, as well as banjo player and leader of the classic stringband
DA COSTA WOLTZ'S SOUTHERN BROADCASTERS.
DaCosta tried to apply his business sense to make the band successful,
but to no avail. The 18 songs the band recorded a few days in 1927
weren't well-recieved at the time and are now rare collector's items
(as is the case with so many of the more obscure rural bands).
The SOUTHERN BROADCASTERS' name must have been wishful thinking --
they never even made it to the radio.
Nevertheless, this quartet was truly exceptional:
the unusual double banjos played by Woltz and Frank Jenkins,
Ben Jarrell's rhythmic fiddling, and the young Price Goodson
on ukulele and harmonica who also sang lead on a few songs.
When one hears Goodson's powerful and stylistic harmonica-playing,
it's hard to imagine he was only 12 years old!
