Patton was known as the first "star" of the Mississippi
Delta blues musicians. He recorded about 70 songs
during the period 1929 - 1934.
He had a powerful, sometimes aggressive
style of guitar playing, often snapping the strings,
dragging a bottle along them
and hitting the side of the guitar.
This, combined with his gruff
shouting/singing style, made Patton stand out
in the long list of bluesmen playing at that time.
He is said to have had white, black and Indian blood.
He supposedly married 8 times, drank heavily and
had a violent temper. He had his throat slit
a year before
he died of heart failure in 1934.
