The Carter Family were the kings (or king and
queens) of early country music.
A.P. Carter, his wife Sara and her cousin Maybelle are believed to be the
one group
that had the greatest effect on country music due to both their singing
style and
Maybelle's distinctive thumbing of the bass notes on the guitar (which
she is said to
have picked up from her African-American neighbor Leslie Riddle).
From 1927 to 1941 the Carter Family recorded about 300 songs, most of which
were
classic traditional ballads that A. P., being the businessman of the three,
somehow managed to "author" and then own.
