Of the many brother duet bands
around in the 1930s, Bill and Earl Bolick, the Blue
Sky Boys, were one of the best.
The duo from North Carolina first recorded in 1936. At that time Bill,
on mandolin, was 18 and Earl, on guitar, was only 16. Though they went
on
to record well into the 1960s, nothing ever came close to matching
the
pristene performances from that first session. Their beautiful
two-part harmony, so controled, yet so natural, often sang
of violence, murder and dying children. Music writer Greil Marcus
argues that their playful and, in his words, "sadistic" rendition
of the murder ballad "On The Banks Of The Ohio" was
truly modern for its time.
