Darlin's Outpost - Darlin's Lookout
Maggie Valley
North Carolina

We have gathered a few brochures from local restaurants and area attractions:

Snow skiing/snow boarding

The Cataloochee ski resort is located just minutes away. Turn right onto Hwy 19 and left at Ghost Town and follow the road to the top. Even if you don’t ski, enjoy a “hot apple pie” drink at the lodge and watch the skiers maneuver down the slopes. There is also a ski resort located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The Parkway is often closed in the winter so you can turn right on Hwy 19, follow through Maggie Valley, and turn left onto 40 to Gatlinburg. You can drive or take the tram to the lodge.

Hiking

You are surrounded by hiking trails. We recommend Water Rock Knob which is close by and offers gorgeous panoramic views and sunsets. Turn right on Hwy 19 and right onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. Follow the parkway and turn left into the entrance once you reach the top. The trail is approximately 1 mile and has points where you can look down to Maggie Valley.

We also recommend you drive into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park where there are numerous trails. You can get to the park either by driving through Cherokee (approx 14 miles) or by turning left onto the parkway. You can pick up a map at the ranger station just after entering the park. One of our favorite trails is Alum Cave Bluff which is a 2.2 mile hike. The trail follows a beautiful creek and offers great views at the cave bluff Pack a lunch and eat it at the top. The Chimney Tops is also a popular trail. Both of these trails are on the Tennessee side of the national park.

 Mountain Biking

Information on area bike trails can be found at the bike shop just

off Main Street in Waynesville. The shop is closed on Sundays.

You can also enjoy the roads that leave from the cabin.

 Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

Take a ride on the open air steam locomotive as it winds through the smokies. See brochures as you can get on the train in Dillsboro or Bryson City.

Sledding

One of the most popular spots for sledding is right around the

corner. Turn right on Hwy 19 and right towards the parkway.

The hill on the right is just right for kids or their parents!

 White Water Rafting

For the adventurous, the Nantahala River is not too far away! See brochures for more information.

 Amusement Parks

Ghost Town in the Sky - turn right on Hwy 19 and follow for 4 miles. Ride a chair lift to the top or take the tram and enjoy the amusement rides and cowboy gun shows.

Santa’s Land - turn left on Hwy 19 and go 8 miles. Dollywood is located in Sevierville just outside of Gatlinburg.

 Gambling

Turn left onto Hwy 19 ,drive 10 miles into the Cherokee Indian

Reservation to get to Harrah’s casino. There is no alcohol on the

reservation.

Running/Walking

Maggie Valley is a great place for a casual stroll or jog. The valley is 2.5 miles from one end to the other. If you start at Ghost Town, it’s 2.5 miles downhill to the last shop and then 2.5 miles back uphill to Ghost Town. This will get you ready for the “Run in the Moonlight” which is a 5 mile race held annually in August that follows this same route. They close one side of the road to traffic so you can run safely in this night race.
