Sometimes, a volcano can erupt without warning.  Most of the time though, the rising magma can cause earthquakes to start.  Another sign that it can show is that it can change the temperature around it.  It can also create some kinds of chemistry with the hot springs.  This kinds are signs are only envolved with the rise of magma toward the surface.
