Mt. Hood

Mt. hood is the largest Mountain in Oregon.  Today it is popular with skiers.  It has not erupted for almost 200 years  The rear of the volcano is at risk as an eruption may occur in the next few years at the base.  There is a giant lava dome on the back called crater rock.  It rises a few feet above the actual crater.

In the last 15,000 years Mt. hood has had four eruptive periods.  During the most recent one the rear of the montain was buried.  The main cone of mount hood was formed 500,00 years ago.  Since then many communities have formed at the base of this volcano.  They are at great risk as it is expected to erupt again very soon.
