Veniaminof
                            Alaska Peninsula, Alaska

You might think it's rare to hear about a volcano in Alaska.
After all, volcanoes are so firey and Alaska is almost all ice!
But no, there are several volcanoes in Alaska, and Veniaminof
just happens to be one of them. Located at 56.2N latitude and
159.4W longitude, Veniaminof is a large stratovolcanoe. This
means that it is made of lava flows and pyroclastic materials.
It also towers over many things, because it's elevation is
        8,223 feet! Thats High!

Although there have been no recent eruptions,
3,700 years ago there was a massive
eruption witch formed a 6 mile long caldera! Caldera is the
spanish word for cauldron. They call it a caldera because it
is a massive indentation in the ground!

There is little chance of human danger at Veniamof because
nobody lives anywhere close or near to it.
But there is one thing that worries scientists. A jokulhlaup.
Jokulhlaup is an unpronounceable Islandic word. It happens
when an eruption occurs under a large ice sheet. Often it will
melt the bottom of the glacier and then the glacier will float
on it's own melted water. Just as soon as that happens, all the
melted water can get out, causing a massive flood. This is a
possibility at Veniaminof. Although it seems inactive, scientists
warn that it could still erupt.
