Volcano Hazards
Volcanoes certainly are fascinating. But they
are very dangerous as well. They have several different hazard, or dangers that i will tell you
about. The first is volcanic earthquakes. Earthquakes
are sometimes related to volcanic activity. An
earthquake is when the ground shakes violently.

The next is a directed blast. Often, volcanoes spew out pyroclastic materials straight up, but landslides can cause it to erupt in a directed way. Mt. St. Helens did this once, it shot pyroclastic materials as far as 19 miles!

The next is Tephra. Volcanoes sometimes eject rocks into the atmosphere. These rocks are known as tephra. If you got hit, it's not likely you'd survive!

Volcanoes dont just spew out lava, there are Volcanic gases as well, wich can poison you. Such gases are sulfur dioxide. This makes volcanic gases the next hazard.

Lava doesn't just fly into the air either! Often,
lava flows down the side of the volcano, causing a lava flow. It would be a shame if you stepped into one, and often times it's easy to do. Lava flows can start to cool, forming soft ground above them. This ground can easily crack though.

If an eruption is large enough, it can cause large landslides of ice or rocks or some odd debris. This can be small or large, it depends on the eruption. The volcanic activity can also cause tsunamis, or large tidal waves that can be lethal.

Pyroclastic Surges can be bad too, but the difference between them and lava flows is that they lack the high concentration of particles and gas. They can be very fast though. There are three different kinds of these: Base Surge, Ash Cloud Surge, and Ground Surges. They are the next hazard.

Next up: Pyroclastic Flows. These flows are like lava flows, but they have large fragments of rock and other things in them. Lava flows are still more dangerous. But pyroclastic flows are still a hazard.

Lahards are one of the worst hazards. Lahards are pretty much identical to pyroclastic flows but they contain water. Definitely one to watch if you live near a volcano.
