The Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas offers language
retraining for students with dyslexia and graduate level training
for teachers of students with dyslexia.

Freemasonry, or Masonry, as it is commonly known, is the oldest
and largest fraternal organization in the world with members in every
free nation. A division of the Masonic Fraternity, the Scottish Rite sponsors
the world's largest program for language disabled children through a system
of learning centers located throughout the United States and in foreign countries.

No charges are made to students or their parents. The center is autonomous
and is funded through contributions from both Masons and non-Masons.
Presently, a nominal tuition fee is charged for teacher training, but scholarships
are available. We encourage you to visit the learning center and learn more
about it's functions.

LANGUAGE RETRAINING CLASSES

The good news is that students with dyslexia are learning to read, write and spell
in language retraining classes at the center. Students are taught by experienced
therapists/teachers using a multisensory, structured, sequential, phonetic-based
curriculum purposely designed for students with dyslexia. Students attend classes
one hour daily, five days a week during the school year and return to their home
classrooms for the remainder of the day. Students age six through adult who
satisfy the entrance requirements are eligible to enroll in the program which
lasts two to three years depending on the individuals progress.

TEACHER TRAINING

More good news is the fact the our teacher training program provides an
opportunity for classroom teachers to learn a curriculum and techniques that
are recognized as effective for teaching basic language skills to students with
dyslexia. Course content and techniques are based on the original Orton-Gillingham
model with additions and refinements developed in the Child Development Center
of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. This program includes
academic instruction, supervised teaching, on-site observations and demonstration
of teaching competency in the curriculum. Teachers completing the comprehensive
program receive certificates as Alphabetic Phonic Therapists.
