World War Two

Introduction

THE TWENTIETH CENTURY WORLD

Year 9

The Spring Term picks up on the consequences of World War I and the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. The various causes of World War II are explored as well as the main events which shaped history eg the 'miracle' of Dunkirk (triumph or disaster?); the Battle of Britain and the changing lives and experiences of people in the Home Front (eg air raids; evacuation; rationing & morale). Grandparents are interviewed and invited in to recount their personal histories.

Other world events are also discussed and recorded:- the Bombing of Pearl Harbour; the horrors of the Holocaust and the moral dilemma in dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Paul Oppenheimer, a Holocaust survivor visits the school and a trip will be organised to Beth shalom (a Holocaust Educational Centre). This year will be a time to express opinion and make judgements!
