The Victorians

Introduction

EXPANSION OF TRADE & INDUSTRY

Year 8

The last term of Year 8 ventures into many varied themes, some of which have implications on our own society. We look at the capture, transportation and experiences of black slaves in the American colonies. Why did this happen and how racist were the Victorians? We also study the vast changes which created industrial Britain, especially the working conditions of children in the factories and mines; including the chimney sweeps and march girls. How extensive is child labour today?

The final part of term will give you an opportunity to study an aspect of Victorian life in depth eg the role of Queen Victoria; health and medicine; schools; crime and punishment (are they better or worse than modern times!)
