The Plains Indians

Introduction

THE PLAINS INDIANS

Year 7

This is a chance to look at the history of another country. Do you still believe what you see in the cowboy and Indian films? This is a chance to discover the truth and find out about how the Plains Indians really lived - where they came from; their tepees and family life; how they hunted buffalos and prepared their food.

Religion was very important to the Plains Indians especially the medicine men, the vision quests and sweat lodges. Sadly, this way of life disappeared when the white man came looking for buffalo hides, land and gold. Despite attempts by the Plains Indians to protect their territory they now live in Reservations, the victims of alcohol and poverty.

You will have the choice of working with a partner as well as making a model eg tepees; masks; mobiles; jewellery; weapons etc
