HISTORICAL ENQUIRY

An enquiry is where you work under your own initiative to produce a piece of research based on the period of time that you are studying.

You may find that you are asked to answer a specific question or concentrate on a personality or issue from that period.

This is your chance to be a true historian and demonstrate your skills of research, comprehension and presentation.

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE IN MY ENQUIRY?

1. An introduction : What is your subject?
Make a prediction as to how and where you are going to find your information.
2. A contents page - Do not be surprised if this is one of the last things you do!
3. Your main body of research broken into 'chapters' or sections.
4. You must include PRIMARY EVIDENCE in the form of quotations from the time; photocopies of photographs, maps etc. ALWAYS WRITE YOUR QUOTATIONS IN A DIFFERENT COLOURED INK AND TELL ME WHO SAID IT AND WHEN.
5. If you have used information from another source e.g. a book, CD ROM, the internet always credit that source e.g. underneath the information write the name of the book and its author that you copied it from.
6. Presentation is important.
THINK ABOUT: how does your work appear on the page?
Have you made good use of photographs, illustrations etc.
Is your writing clear and legible ?
Do you want to use a word processor?
7. If possible think of other ways of presenting information e.g.
  Charts Graphs
  Maps Bar Graphs
8. You will need to include a piece of empathy - this is COMPULSORY
- you are this person living at the time.
9. A CONCLUSION - This is most important. What have your learnt from your enquiry.
Did you find the research easy ?
Were there any difficulties ?
what were they and how did you resolve them?
What did you find most interesting/enjoyable about your enquiry - why?
10. A BIBLIOGRAPHY
Write down the names of any books you have used and who wrote them.
Write down your other sources of information e.g. ENCARTA, INTERNET
11. Most of all enjoy this opportunity to work on your own individual research.
Prove to yourself (and me!) What you can do!
