Brisbane and Queensland Road
Classification
There are two primary numeric road classification systems used in
Queensland and the Brisbane Metropolitan area.
The first, and most obvious, is the Metroad and State Route system which
classifies major roads based on their route to and through the suburbs.
Additionally there is the National route system which radiate from the
outskirts of the metropolitan area from where the Metroads end.
The second system of classification is the Department of Main Roads numbering
system which is used solely within the Department for identification purposes.
Metroads
Introduced in 1995, the Metroads streamlined the road network for through
traffic across the metropolitan area linking the entering inter-state and
inter-regional highways.

National Highways and National Routes
The National Highway and Route network forms Australia's main interstate and
inter-regional highway system. In Brisbane the four major routes converge on
the metropolitan area and become Metroads. Several other non-major National
routes remain in the Brisbane area.
M1. Formerly National Route 1, the M1 follows the Pacific Motorway to
the Gold Coast where it eventually becomes the Pacific Highway and returns to
National Route 1 into New South Wales.
National A2 is new designation that replaces the former National Highway
54. The A2 forms part of the Brisbane-Darwin link of the National Highway
system and commences on the edge of Brisbane at the Warrego Highway.
National Highway 15. The Cunningham Highway enters Brisbane via the
Southern Ipswich Bypass and National Highway 15. This is part of the
Brisbane-Sydney link of the National Highway network. The National Highway
follows Metroads 2 and 1 across Brisbane, joining it with the southern end of
the Bruce Highway.
National Highway 1 heads north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway forming
the link to Cairns.
National Route 13. The Mount Lindesay Highway and Beaudesert Rd carry
National Route 13, which could be considered a relic of the original National
Route system. Its counterpart section in New South Wales has been
decommissioned, and 13 now only connects two State Routes and no longer links
any National Routes. It is the opinion of the writer that this route be downgraded
to a State Route level for uniformity reasons.
Business National Route 15. This route is possibly the only Business
route left in the National Route network, following the former route of
National 15 through the Ipswich city centre.
State Routes
State Routes are intended to be an aid to navigation purposes, but many of them
have been truncated or appear to serve little purpose other than confusing the
motorist. Many have been displaced by the Metroads, which explains some of the
truncations. State Routes form a network of preferred cross-city routes and do
not necessarily follow roads controlled by the Department of Main Roads.
