ARNOW GERVISE YOUNG
GERVISE WITH SISTER RUTH
GERVISE WITH WIFE BESSIE AND DAUGHTER SHIRLEY
Gervise Arnow (Arnold) Young was born 1904 in Ohio.  He was my maternal grandfather.  His father was Gervise Young born 1979. Gervise, Arnow's father with the help of his wife Nellie Crall founded the "New Hollander" newspaper.  He later worked as the forman of the press room at the "Columbus Dispatch" newspaper in Columbus, OH.  His mother was Nellie Young nee Crall.  My Grandfather died 1962 in Columbus, OH.  My Great-Grandfather Gervise died somewhere between 1920 and 1930.  Nellie died in 1935.  Gervise had two sisters, Jeanette and Ruth, both married.

Gervise Sr.'s father was John L. Young.  Very little is known of him either except that he was born in Massachussett in 1848.  He married Margarite Tomlinson, she arrived in Ohio from Pennsylvania in a covered wagon.  She later taught school, she was just a slip of a thing, but she kept the all the children in line.  She practiced the golden rule.  Spare the rod, spoil the child.

Nellie Young's father was Leroy Crall, also born in Mass. during 1848.  He was a  portrait painter.  There is little if anything known of him, except prior to marrying my grandmother he was in Kentucky.  We are not even sure if any of his portraits survived.

He was married to Emma Cook, daughter of Amos Cook.  She married Leroy Crall in Pickaway County.  She was born 1854 in Circleville, OH.  She died in Columbus, OH,  1923.  Her father, Amos, born 1823, in PA was a Civil War veteran.  He served with the 155th Regiment , Ohio National Guard as a Private.
By trade he was a carpenter.  He was married to Elizabeth Nigh, the daughter of Michael Nigh.   In the book "History of Ohio Counties"  the following except was found regarding Elizabeth Nigh's family;

When she was a child, her parents, Amosand Elizabeth (Nigh) Cook, moved to Circleville, where she was educated.  Her father was the son of a Pennsylvania farmer, and was born and reared in that State.  Her mother was the daughter of early pioneers of Ohio, and her father was a soldier in the War of 1812, and lost his life during that conflict.*

A note on this is that Michael Nigh, whom they are referring here to (Elizabeth's father actually died during the Mexican War.  He died in Mexico, his son was with him at the time.

He was married to Mary Ann Betchel, born 1811, after Michael's death she married a man named Cherry.

Michael Nigh was born into an amazing family.  Not only was he a war hero and explorer, but his grandfather was a commissioned officer in the Revelutionary War in the state of Maryland.
He was elected Justice of the peace in Maryland  about 1802, then to the Ohio General Assembly, then Trustee to the Poor.

Mary Betchel's grandfather was written about in "The History of Centre and Clinton, Pennsylvania";

From the History of Centre and Clinton County, Pennsylvania: Christian Bechdel, a native of York County, made his way from there in1790, and reaching the Bald Eagle valley, located upon a tract of land, and settled down to farming.

These
ancestrors were of German stock.  Who settled primarily in Pennsylvania before moving on to Ohio.
