Wilbur's Mountain

On top of Wilbur's mountain, there's a message carved in stone,
near a small log house where it's said, that wilbur lived alone,

I gathered he was a common man, tall it stature and quiet plain,
yet no one knew how old he was, or even his last name,

It's known he welcomed all who came and loved his fellow man,
and judged no one from outside in, for that was not God's plan.

They say his voice was soft and deep and he wrote a lot each day,
yet not one page was ever found, when wilbur passed away

The only words he left behind were carved in that old stone,
they simply read "I lived by myself, but never was alone."

Nothing else was on that stone not even Wilbur's name,
but people knew he wrote it and that is why they came.

I camped upon that mountain top and watched the people come,
no matter what their language, it was understood by everyone.

Wilbur's words appeared it seems in every dialect known to man,
yet no one ever questioned why each could understand.

A blind man came with dog and cane and stood beside that stone,
and read allowed the last four words, "I never was alone"

Even folks  that never learned to read or write a line,
stood before that old carved stone, and read each word just fine.

I don't remember where I learned of the mountain or the stone,
and I can't recall my journey there, but that place to be was known.

The years have passed and I have tried to get back to that place,
but no one's heard of Wilbur, and of the mountains there's no trace.

But what I learned on Wilbur's mountain made my spirit strong,
and his  price for teaching, was to always pass it on.

I believe that all the words he wrote and were never ever found,
are just the names of all those souls, that pass his love along.
