Our ‘Baptismal Call’

I’ve never liked the word ‘volunteer’ when it comes to giving our time, talent and treasure to the church. Stewardship is a good alternative, but even that doesn’t quite get to the heart of why we do what we do. It’s deeper than that. It goes back to the very beginnings of our journey in faith – our baptism. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church “Baptism makes us members of the Body of Christ: “Therefore…we are members of one another.” Baptism incorporates us into the Church. From the baptismal font is born the People of God. We, the baptized become “living stones to be built into a spiritual house.” We are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people…” We belong no longer to ourselves or to this world, but “to him who died and rose for us.” As such we are “called to be subject to others, to serve them in the communion of the Church…” Basically what we are told is that we are CALLED to serve! It is not just a nice thing to do, it is our duty, and it is our responsibility. “Reborn as sons of God, [the baptized] must profess before men the faith they have received from God through the church” and participate in the apostolic and missionary activity of the People of God. (CCC 1267-1270)

I don’t know about you, but to me, in the busy and hectic reality of our lives, that seems like an overwhelmingly tall order. But in truth, there are so many simple ways in which we can each live out our baptismal call. One way is to serve our children as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Getting right down to it, there are five different areas of service to consider. Some won’t take more than a trip to the grocery store or 5 minutes breaking down tables and moving chairs. Other activities involve a little more time and effort. All are of equal importance!!! I’m not going to say that service is “required”, as that is another word I myself am not very fond of. What I will say is this…I am simply asking parents to be parents! Nothing more…nothing less. So, take an active role in the continued faith formation of your teen by flipping this sheet over and signing up to help “Feel The Fire!” Thank you and God Bless!

Now is our chance to walk the talk!

Please read through the following five areas of service then fill out this form by checking all the areas that you’d be interested in helping out with! It’s that simple! Remember…I’m not asking you to sign your life away, but I am asking you to live the life you’ve been called to live! So, sign-up where you feel most comfortable and I’ll be calling each of you to schedule specific dates and times! If you already know the dates you’re available, I have provided space at the bottom of the page to jot those down! If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call or E-mail me! Thanks Again!

FOOD / DRINKS - (We ALL know how much teens like to eat! If you’re interested in cooking or buying and bringing  snacks then PLEASE check food / drinks! Our teens will thank you and so will I! This is a critical need.)

SET-UP / CLEAN-UP - (Have you ever tried moving 20 tables all by yourself? I have and let me tell you…it’s not any fun at all! But it’s amazing how quickly it goes when one or two people show up to help! If you’re interested in helping us set up before and clean up after occasional Confirmation Sessions then PLEASE check set-up / clean-up!)

CHAPERONES - (Do you like to travel and hang out with teens?!? If you said YES then you should be a chaperone! (Either that, or you’re a little on the crazy side J) Chaperones join us on various trips and events throughout the year! If you’re interested…PLEASE check chaperones!)

PRESENTATIONS / SKITS - (Do you have a desire to share the faith with young people in an energetic and exciting way? Then you’re in the right place! At the heart of our Confirmation sessions are the presentations and skits! The only requirement is an enthusiastic love of our faith and about 30minutes of your life! If you think you can handle that, then PLEASE check presentations / skits!)

ATTENDANCE FOLLOWUP – (Got a bit of clerical blood in your veins? We need a volunteer at each session to call the homes of those students who are missing and see why.)
