Welcome to the Learning Center
SKILLED TRADES UPDATE: 10/05
JOBS DESCRIPTIONS
After a recent conversation regarding the SKILLED TRADES PROGRAM, the Learning Center Staff is making a few general announcements.  At present there is no scheduled testing session.  However it does seem possible that there may be a test session in the future.  Some information has been shared with our staff that we can communicate to those who are intersted in the program.
**Testing eligibility:  There is limited access to the testing process.
**There are two elements in the Skilled Trades Testing program. A written test and an interview.
**The Written Test has a value of 45 points.  It consists of sections on math {whole numbers, fractions, decimal operations, ratio & proportion, percent, signed (directed) numbers, algebra, geometry; graphic math}, spatial relationships, blue print reading, mechanical comprehension and reading comprehension.  A mininum score of 30-39 is necessary.  The test is created, normed and scored by an independent testing organazation.  It is administered nationally by hourly and salaried GM employees.
For those who score well locally, the next step in the process is the interview.  The interview is conducted on site and can gain the tester up to 27 additional points.
The overall highest combined scores are used for placement within the program.  Scores, location and current/future needs are all consided in the process to determine eligibilty for placement in the program.
                                                           GETTING READY
It is strongly suggested that anyone interested in the program immediately and continually prepare for the next testing session.  It appears that the lead time from announcing the test date would only be 4 to 6 weeks prior to the acutal date.  In many cases, that would not be enough time to sufficently prepare for the testing sessions.  A resource text book is available.  The current text,
PRE-APPRENTICE TRAINING was copywriten in 2006 and may be purchased at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Bookstore

1                                                     WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Regular group classes are available to review those general skill areas.  Currently
YOU can come into the Center and use the programs already available.  They allow you to work at your own pace on computer-assisted software.  These help you review and sharpen your skills in whole number, fraction, decimal operations, ratio & proportion, percent, signed (directed) numbers, algebra, geometry, graphic math, mechanical comprehension, and reading comprehension.  This is all on the PASS KEY program.  It is available at all times when the center is open.  If you are not currently enrolled but would like to use the system, please contact any Learning Center staff member to sign up.  We are currently working to add spatial relationships and blue print reading resources. We hope to add similar items at the Center soon.  Contact Larry Taylor (3002) or Jeff Dye (3054) for information or questions concerning the Apprentice program.
