Run Off - The run off is one of the biggest news items in New Mexico.
Quite a few counties in the northern part of the state have had flood warnings
the past week or so. The lakes along the Pecos drainage will soon be to
capacity and other lakes are doing just as well. River rafters in the
Rio Grande Gorge are having a field day with the amount of water coming down -
most never having seen this much water ever and making for interesting rides.
Unfortunately, the fishing is almost nonexistent with this much water.
The San Juan River is flowing at 5,000 mas or menos - it can only be fished
safely from a boat; too much water for wading. The Red River is too
muddy and high to be fished as are many other streams in the state. This
should be a good summer with this much water and we look forward to getting on
the stream.
In the July issue of Rocky Mountain Game and Fish will be an article on the
Rio Costilla that may be worth reading.
Grouse Hunters
Although the Blue Grouse season is still a couple of months away, my
available dates are quickly filling. This is a very unique upland
hunting and some consider it the hardest upland hunting you may ever do.
We hunt behind Labrador Retrievers. Contact me for more information on
the hunt, mailto:

Fly fishing tip
Aquatic insect species normally get smaller in the summer. This
is nature's way of protecting the insects from dehydration from the summer
warmth. Equally, in winter the insects are larger in order to conserve
more energy with the larger body mass. Pick your patterns accordingly.
