Fish Report
April 9 & 10, 2005. San Juan River with University of
New Mexico Recreational Programs. The river was fishing well enough but
the weather was horrible. Day one was super windy making casting a
little hard. Day two we woke up to a light dusting of snow, by the time
we got to the river the wind kicked up again and it was cold. When we
started fishing the air temperature was 36 degrees. But, every one had a
few hook ups and some caught multiple fish on the typical patterns of the San
Juan. River was flowing at 477 CFS and very murky. Navajo Lake has
come up a lot from last fall when I was up at the river. Towards the end
of the month the water flows will come up even more on the river - pay
attention to the flows before planning a trip here. There is talk about
the flows going up to 5,000 CFS.
Cool March
Last March was one of the coolest on record.
Being so cool, it has delayed the run off a little while longer which in the
long run is great. More moisture can soak into the ground. The
mountains have received a lot of snow this past winter and we look forward to
this years fly fishing. Unfortunately, the El Niņo that was helping us
with the snow and rain seems to be fading a bit.
A quick reminder; the new fishing and hunting license year began on April 1,
2005.

Fly Fishing Tip
Knowing when and how to use one pattern to
effectively represent several insect species will put any angler quantum leaps
ahead of the angler with dozens of patterns in their fly fishing vest.
For example: Pheasant tail nymph - it does a very good job representing
many mayfly species and in larger sizes can represent small stoneflies.
Also, you can fish this pattern from the bottom of streambed to just under the
surface imitating different life stages of the aquatic insects living in the
water. Furthering the Pheasant Tails effectiveness and fish catching
appeal - tyers sometimes put a bead on it.
